Inleiding
KATHOLIEKE KERK van de parochie O.L.V. Geboorte, 1934, in een sobere traditionele stijl, beïnvloed door elementen van Gotiek en Zakelijk Expressionisme. Gebouwd in opdracht van het R.K. Kerkbestuur O.L.V.-Geboorte, naar een ontwerp van de Sittardse architect Jos. Wielders. De kerk is gesitueerd in de oude kern van Broeksittard, op de kruising van de twee hoofdstraten van het thans door stadsuitbreidingswijken omgeven voormalige dorp. De ten noordwesten van de kerk gesitueerde pastorie, middels een verbindingsgang verbonden met de doopkapel, en de bijgebouwde garage aan de absiszijde zijn UITGESLOTEN van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Katholieke kerk met driebeukig basilicaal schip op een in hoofdvorm ten opzichte van de lengte-as gespiegelde kruisvormige plattegrond. Aan de westzijde een narthex, tussen doopkapel en toren. Ronde absis aan de oostzijde, uitgebouwde sacristie en stookruimte aan de oostzijde van de kruisarmen, aan weerszijden van de absis. In de oksels van de zijbeuken en de kruisarmen, een uitgebouwde biechtstoelnis van één laag onder plat. In de oksel van de noordoostelijke kruisarm en de sacristie is een entreepartij van één bouwlaag onder plat gebouwd.
Het schip wordt gedekt door een steil Hollands zadeldak. De daken van de kruisarmen hebben een lagere noklijn en zijn dwars ingestoken op het ter plaatse verder aflopende zadeldak van het schip. De noordoostelijke kruisarm is voorzien van een hoge schoorsteen met verankering. De absis heeft een half kegeldak. De narthex aan de westzijde heeft een zadeldak met een ten opzichte van het schip verlaagde noklijn. Op deze narthex sluit aan de noordwestzijde de doopkapel aan, die wordt gedekt door een dwars op het narthexdak ingestoken kap. Alle zadeldaken, de absis en de ingestoken daken zijn voorzien van meerkleurige Hollandse pannen. Aan de noordoostzijde van de narthex is de toren geplaatst, waarop een spits met leien in Maasdekking en een kruis op koperen bol. De zijbeuken, de biechtstoelnissen, de verbindingsgang naar de pastorie, de sacristie en de stookruimte hebben platte daken.
In de lichtbeuken van het schip bevinden zich acht, tweegewijs gekoppelde, spitsboogvormige stalen vensters met glas-in-lood en drievoudige rollaag. Daaronder, in beide zijbeuken, drie ronde stalen glas-in-lood vensters met een kunststenen waterspuier. Soortgelijke vensters bevinden zich in de buitengevel van de doopkapel aan de noordwestzijde en in de basis van de toren aan de westzijde. In de beëindiging van de kruisarmen aanzienlijke spitsboogvormige stalen vensters met glas-in-lood, waarboven een viervoudige rollaag. In elke zijde van het torentrappenhuis zijn drie kleine stalen spitsboogvensters geplaatst. Een rechthoekig stalen 8-ruits venster in de zuidoostzijde van de absis zorgt voor de lichtinval in het koor. In de entreepartij van de sacristie aan de noordoostzijde is een rechthoekige houten deur met een reeks van vier rechthoekige houten zijlichten geplaatst. Deze zijlichten hebben dubbel horizontaal traliewerk. In de oostgevel van de sacristie zijn, onder een betonlatei, twee in grootte variërende rechthoekige stalen vensters met glas-in-lood geplaatst. De stookruimte aan de zuidoostzijde heeft een rechthoekige houten deur en drie rechthoekige houten vensters met drievoudig horizontaal traliewerk.
In de narthex zijn, verdiept in een galerij, drie rondboogvormige dubbele houten paneeldeuren met beslag geplaatst. Deze galerij is toegankelijk via een drietal rondbogen, waarin een vijfvoudige rollaag. De bogen worden gesloten door een zeer smalle hardstenen sluitsteen, waarboven de symbolen van geloof, hoop en liefde in hardsteenreliëf. De muurdammen tussen en aan weerszijden van de bogen risaleren enigszins en hebben een hardstenen afdekking. Centraal boven de entreepartij is het stalen spitsboogvormige oxaalvenster met glas-in-lood geplaatst. De kerk heeft een zich vlak onder de spits versmallende toren. In deze versmalling zijn de spitsboogvormige galmgaten aangebracht.
De buitengevels zijn opgetrokken in rood genuanceerde baksteen, gemetseld in kettingverband.
Aan de noordwestzijde, tussen de verbindingsgang van pastorie naar doopkapel en de bakstenen erfscheiding met ezelsrug, is een kalkstenen H.Hartbeeld van J. Weerts, XXb, geplaatst. Achter het beeld, in de muur van de verbindingsgang gemetseld, het tympaan van de oude kerk, waarin de tekst: "1841; Houdt God altijd voor oogen". Klokkenstoel met gelui bestaande uit een klok van C. Drouot, 1810, diam. 45 cm en drie moderne klokken. Het INTERIEUR van de kerk is geheel in geel metselwerk uitgevoerd, gemetseld in kettingverband met terugliggende voegen. Het schip wordt aan weerszijden van de zijbeuken gescheiden door vier segmentboogvormige scheibogen. Schip en oxaal worden overwelfd door vijf spitsbooggewelven, opgebouwd uit bakstenen troggewelfjes tussen ijzeren ribben. In elke kruisarm bevindt zich een soortgelijk spitsbooggewelf. De zijbeuken hebben vlakke zolderingen. Betegelde vloeren in schip, zijbeuken en op het priesterkoor. Originele kerkbanken op vlonders. Oxaal, met betonnen balustrade, op de narthex. Deze narthex heeft aan de schipzijde een centraal geplaatste, dubbele ronde houten deur, aan de zuidwestzijde geflankeerd door drie segmentboogvormige houten deur(openingen), aan de noordwestzijde door twee (waarvan de buitenste toegang geeft tot de doopkapel en de verbindingsgang met de pastorie). Aan weerszijden van de centrale dubbele entreedeur twee hardstenen wijwaterbekkens op gele bakstenen kolommen. Verder zijn in het interieur onder meer van belang de vier gebrandschilderde glas-in-lood ramen in stalen kozijnen in de sacristie, plus één gebrandschilderd glas-in-lood raam in stalen kozijn in de misdienaarssacristie, gedateerd 8 december 1934; de kruisweg in houtsnijwerk; hoofdaltaar, doopvont, communiebanken en zijaltaren van Carara-marmer, 1934; preekstoel van Carara-marmer, waarop drie voorstellingen van de bergrede in hoog reliëf, ca. 1934; gepolychromeerd houten beeld van de H.Brigida, XIX; gepolychromeerd houten H.Hartbeeld, XXa; gepolychromeerd eikenhouten Lambertusbeeld, XXc; houten triomfkruis met moderne polychromie, XIXA; staand lindenhouten kruisbeeld met corpus, XIXB; eikenhouten, niet gepolychromeerd kruisbeeld, XXA; twee gebrandschilderde ramen in transepten in spitsboog, voorstellende de aanbidding van de herders en de wijzen c.q. de verrijzenis, Louis van Essen te Roermond, 1934; in elke lichtbeuk acht spitsboogramen met inzetten van bustes van Goede Herder en diverse heiligen; gebrandschilderd raam in het westwerk, O.L.V. van Lourdes; in de absis een muurschildering van Maria met Kind en een zestal heiligen van Charles Tangelder, 1946-1947.

The church is situated in the old centre of Broeksittard, at the intersection of the two main streets of the formerly rural village now surrounded by urban expansion districts. The parsonage situated to the north-west of the church, connected by a connecting passage to the baptistery, and the adjoining garage on the apse side are EXCLUDED from protection.
Description
Catholic church with three-aisled basilical nave on a cross-shaped ground plan mirrored along its longitudinal axis. On the west side a narthex, between baptistery and tower. Round apse on the east side, extended sacristy and boiler room on the east side of the transept arms, on either side of the apse. In the corners of the side aisles and the transept arms, an extended confessional booth of one storey with a flat roof. In the corner of the north-eastern transept arm and the sacristy an entrance section of one storey with a flat roof has been built.
The nave is covered by a steep Dutch gabled roof. The roofs of the transept arms have a lower ridge line and are set transversely across the further sloping gabled roof of the nave at that point. The north-eastern transept arm is provided with a high chimney with anchoring. The apse has a half conical roof. The narthex on the west side has a gabled roof with a ridge line lowered in relation to the nave. On this narthex the baptistery adjoins on the north-west side, which is covered by a roof structure set transversely across the narthex roof. All gabled roofs, the apse and the inserted roofs are provided with multi-coloured Dutch tiles. On the north-east side of the narthex the tower is positioned, topped by a spire with slates in Maas covering and a cross on a copper ball. The side aisles, the confessional booths, the connecting passage to the parsonage, the sacristy and the boiler room have flat roofs.
In the clerestory of the nave there are eight, coupled in pairs, pointed arch-shaped steel windows with leaded glass and triple sash windows. Below, in both side aisles, three round steel leaded glass windows with a limestone water spout. Similar windows are located in the outer wall of the baptistery on the north-west side and in the base of the tower on the west side. In the termination of the transept arms considerable pointed arch-shaped steel windows with leaded glass, above which a four-fold sash window. In each side of the tower staircase three small steel pointed arch windows have been placed. A rectangular steel 8-pane window in the south-east side of the apse provides light to the choir. In the entrance section of the sacristy on the north-east side a rectangular wooden door with a series of four rectangular wooden side lights has been placed. These side lights have double horizontal glazing bars. In the east wall of the sacristy, under a concrete lintel, two rectangular steel windows with leaded glass of varying size have been placed. The boiler room on the south-east side has a rectangular wooden door and three rectangular wooden windows with triple horizontal glazing bars.
In the narthex, recessed in a gallery, three round-arched double wooden panel doors with fittings are placed. This gallery is accessible via three round arches, in which a five-fold roll moulding. The arches are closed by a very narrow ashlar keystone, above which the symbols of faith, hope and charity in ashlar relief. The wall piers between and on either side of the arches project slightly and have an ashlar coping. Centrally above the entrance section the steel pointed-arch oxeye window with stained glass is placed. The church has a tower that narrows just below the spire. In this narrowing the pointed-arch sound holes are arranged.
The outer facades are constructed in red-toned brick, laid in chain bond.
On the northwest side, between the connecting passage from the rectory to the baptistry and the brick boundary wall with saddle back, is a limestone Sacred Heart statue by J. Weerts, second half of 20th century, placed. Behind the statue, built into the wall of the connecting passage, the tympanum of the old church, in which the text: "1841; Keep God always in sight". Bell frame with bells consisting of a bell by C. Drouot, 1810, diam. 45 cm and three modern bells. The INTERIOR of the church is entirely executed in yellow brickwork, laid in chain bond with recessed joints. The nave is separated on either side by the side aisles through four segmental arch partition arches. Nave and oxeye are vaulted by five pointed-arch vaults, constructed from brick trough vaults between iron ribs. In each transept arm is a similar pointed-arch vault. The side aisles have flat ceilings. Tiled floors in nave, side aisles and in the choir. Original church pews on platforms. Oxeye, with concrete balustrade, on the narthex. This narthex has on the nave side a centrally placed double round wooden door, on the southwest side flanked by three segmental arch wooden door(openings), on the northwest side by two (of which the outer one gives access to the baptistry and the connecting passage with the rectory). On either side of the central double entrance door two ashlar holy water basins on yellow brick columns. Further in the interior are notably the four stained glass windows in steel frames in the sacristy, plus one stained glass window in steel frame in the altar servers' sacristy, dated 8 December 1934; the stations of the cross in woodcarving; high altar, baptismal font, communion rails and side altars of Carrara marble, 1934; pulpit of Carrara marble, on which three representations of the Sermon on the Mount in high relief, c. 1934; polychrome wooden statue of St. Brigida, 19th century; polychrome wooden Sacred Heart statue, early 20th century; polychrome oak wooden Lambertus statue, late 20th century; wooden triumphal cross with modern polychromy, late 19th century A; standing linden wooden crucifix with corpus, late 19th century B; oak wooden, unpainted crucifix, early 20th century A; two stained glass windows in transepts in pointed arch, depicting the adoration of the shepherds and the wise men respectively the resurrection, Louis van Essen at Roermond, 1934; in each light bay eight pointed-arch windows with insets of busts of the Good Shepherd and various saints; stained glass window in the west section, Our Lady of Lourdes; in the apse a wall painting of Mary with Child and six saints by Charles Tangelder, 1946-1947.
