Inleiding

Leien in Maasdekking.

Introduction

JESUIT BOARDING SCHOOL named St. Aloysius College adjoining Franciscus Solanus Building, 1873, in a nineteenth-century traditional building style. Built on the orders of the Jesuit Fathers established since 1851 in the former Dominican monastery, after a design by architect Albert Slootmaekers SJ. The boarding school was built after demolition of the old plague house against the wall, to the east of the House on the Berg, in a transverse direction between the Dominicanen wall and the old Dominican monastery with St. Michael's Church. This created an inner courtyard, the so-called cour solanus, between the boarding school on the west side, the Dominicanen wall on the north side, the former Dominican monastery with St. Michael's Church on the south side and the present Kerkepad on the east side.

The stairwell attached to the south facade of the boarding school, for connection of the boarding school with the Dominican monastery, is of subordinate importance for protection; the extension of one storey against the rear facade of the boarding school is EXCLUDED from protection.

Description

The St. Aloysius College has a floor plan that is RECTANGULAR in main form, on the east side with three slightly projecting entrance sections. Three STOREYS plus attic storey. The whole is covered by a ROOF TRUSS STRUCTURE with a raised, flattened central section and slightly sloping hipped roof. Slates in Maas covering. Spout gables on the north and south sides.

The St. Aloysius College has a hard stone plinth and is built in brick, laid in stretcher bond. Hard stone lintels. Stuccoed pilasters, frieze and drip mouldings. Wall anchors. Window surrounds.

Symmetrical FRONT FACADE on the east side, provided with projecting middle and corner sections of respectively three and one window axes, accentuated by stuccoed corner pilasters. Both intermediate volumes each count six window axes. Horizontal division by means of stuccoed drip mouldings. A stuccoed chevron arch frieze in the cornice.

The projecting central section has in the middle axis of the first storey a protruding entrance with balcony. Round-arched, double wooden door with glass panels and radial articulation of the fanlight. On both short sides a segmental arch-shaped wooden side light window in T-form with back-pane articulation of the glass panels. Below the open-worked, stuccoed balcony balustrade a stuccoed dentil moulding. A segmental arch-shaped double wooden door with vertically articulated fanlight provides access to the balcony. For the rest, the three middle axes in every storey are provided with segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with back-pane articulation of the glass panels. The projecting central section is crowned by a cornice-topped gable consisting of a raised central section and flanking attic mouldings. The raised central section is provided with a segmental arch-shaped wooden T-window with six-pane articulation of the glass panels. Above this window a stuccoed chevron arch frieze in the cornice. The open-worked attic moulding, provided with glass in the baluster openings, provides light to the attic storey.

The projecting corner sections of one axis end in a cornice-topped gable with open-worked baluster attic. Round-arched wooden entrance door, on the north side without glass panel, with radial articulation of the fanlight. In the second and third storeys a segmental arch-shaped wooden T-window with back-pane articulation of the glass panels.

In every storey of the intermediate volumes counting six axes are segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with back-pane articulation of the glass panels placed.

The REAR FACADE on the east side, only visible from the inner courtyard between basilica, House on the Berg and sisters' accommodation, is austere and built exclusively in brick. The facade is articulated vertically with pilasters, horizontally with two profiled ornamental mouldings with mortared cross motifs. This creates three facade surfaces each with four axes. Cornice with chevron arch frieze and dentil decorations. The facade surfaces are irregularly articulated: in the first storey, partly whitewashed, almost all segmental arch-shaped window mouldings are mortared shut. For the rest segmental arch-shaped vertically articulated windows; in the second storey seven segmental arch-shaped wooden windows, of which five with pointed arch-shaped, stained glass inserts, set in a border of coloured glass-in-lead. The windows without stained glass are vertically articulated; in the third storey segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with six-pane articulation of the glass panels; between the second and third storey, at the height of the southern stairwell, a considerable double wooden cross window in a segmental arch-shaped moulding with infill.

In the part of the southern spout gable that became free after the addition of the stairwell connection, the frieze of the cornice is visible. The likewise spout-shaped northern end gable is articulated by means of pilasters, between which a chevron arch frieze, articulated in three axes. The broad middle axis ends in a broad gable, wherein at the height of the attic storey two segmental arch-shaped wooden T-windows with back-pane articulation of the glass panels. In the second storey per axis a segmental arch-shaped wooden T-window with six-pane glazing bars articulation of the glass panels. In the first storey, above the wall, four segmental arch-shaped corridor windows with vertical articulation.

The so-called cour solanus, situated between the Dominicanen wall, the St. Aloysius College and the Dominican monastery, has been partly remodelled whilst retaining the brick gate piers, between which a two-part wrought iron gate.

The main articulation of the INTERIOR is partly preserved: staircases on either side of corridors with classrooms respectively living rooms. In the first storey the articulation has been largely altered for the purposes of administration rooms and classrooms. The large former refectory, now canteen, containing two rows of cast iron columns and lowered ceilings behind which the original stucco ceilings are hidden, is still recognizable as such. In the second storey a completely renewed articulation with classrooms. The third storey has a completely renewed articulation with classrooms. The attic storey has a remarkable roof truss structure. The attic is partly fitted out as an office.

Valuation

The St. Aloysius College is of cultural-historical value as a special expression of a spiritual and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, the involvement of architect Slootmaekers SJ, the aesthetic qualities of his design, the use of materials and the ornamentation.

The building is situated in the protected urban townscape of Sittard, and because of this location is connected with the development of the historic city centre and is of particular significance for the appearance of Sittard. The college possesses, as regards the exterior, a reasonable to high degree of architectural integrity and is of great importance in relation to the structural integrity of the nineteenth-century monastery complex and the visual integrity of the urban environment. Moreover, the St. Aloysius College possesses a high degree of architectural-historical rarity and in a regional context a reasonable to high typological rarity.

The St. Aloysius College represents a matter of general concern because of the entirety of the aforementioned values.
