The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Dwelling house, former medical practice, situated on one of the main streets of Oudenbosch and originating from around 1850-1860 from renovation and heightening of an older, possibly eighteenth-century dwelling house. It displays Neo-Classical forms. Internally it was renovated around 1930-1940 in Expressionist style by Roosendaal architect J. Hurks.

Description.

Two-storey dwelling house, constructed of hand-made brick with a plastered, unpainted front facade, under a gabled roof covered with old-Dutch tiles. The front facade has five bays and has a hard stone plinth. It is articulated by a cordon moulding and finished with a broad cornice and gutter on corbels. The lower part of the facade has fluted plasterwork, the upper part is kept flat. The plasterwork was applied or renewed around 1930. Below are sash windows with leaded glass fanlights and profiled mouldings. The upper windows are T-windows. The front door is a reinforced door renewed around 1930-1940 in a wooden frame with pilasters on a hard stone base and a profiled drip moulding on two volutes with decorative carving and palmettes. Leaded glass fanlight from around 1930-1940. The side facade has on the upper storey a six-pane sash window and on the attic two six-pane roof windows. Simple wall anchors and an ornamental anchor with volutes. The rear facade is plastered and whitewashed and at storey height somewhat raised and finished flat. Here we find a door and on the first floor a window with fanlights with radiating frames. The kitchen is located in an annex constructed in the late 19th century, finished flat. Internally behind the front door is a glazed draught lobby to a design by Hurks. Opposite this lobby a stairwell with double quarter-turn staircase with balusters and carving and to the right of it a door with etched glass giving access to the corridor of the rear building. To the left and right of the hall with marble floor are broad panel doors with mouldings and cornice from the early 19th century. On the left the former pharmacy and treatment room with a pine Neo-Renaissance pharmacy cabinet with pediment and counter. Below these rooms are cellars with respectively oak beam layers and brick troughs on iron profiles. To the right of the hall a suite of rooms with panelling, softboard ceiling, doors and fanlights in Expressionist style in the main colours brown and black, all to drawings by J. Hurks. On the upper storey simple rooms, some with stucco ceilings and in the stair hall a composite lobby with etched windows. The roof structure consists of roof trusses with mortise-and-tenon joints on which sit a triangular roof truss and purlins.

Valuation.

The dwelling house is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an expression of a geographical development, namely the growth of the town centre in the 19th century; it has art-historical value because of the distinctive use of materials, because of the building history and because of its place in the oeuvre of architect Hurks; it forms part of a larger whole that is of national importance in urban planning terms and it has been well preserved.
