(Former) ARTIST'S RESIDENCE "Vincent" from 1927, with extension from 1934 by artist Jan Ponstijn (1883-1970). The property is executed in a traditionalist building style inspired by rural architecture with interior influences from the English Arts and Crafts Movement to designs by and executed by Jan Ponstijn who together with artist Jan Voskuil is responsible for the figurative sculptural work appearing on the facades and in the interior. In the largely original state preserved interior, sayings, partly tiles made by the artist himself and various family and municipal coats of arms are placed in various locations. The artist's residence lies with the long wing parallel to the Vincent van Goghweg and the short wing on the Wiertdijkje.

Description

Artist's residence of one storey with an attic floor on an L-shaped ground plan with in the corner a single-storey flat kitchen extension. Above the long wing (1927) two gabled roofs of different heights and above the short cross wing (1934) at right angles to it a gabled roof. The roofs are thatched and have an overhang in the end facades executed as gables. The facades on the ground floor are partly constructed in brick and partly in weatherboarded timber. The slightly projecting attic floor consists of horizontal and vertical brown chiselled wooden parts. At the end facades the ends of the beam layers of the attic floors are decorated with figurative woodcarving as corbels. Windows, partly with eight- and six-paned glazing bars and partly with plain glass-in-lead. On the left of the south facade of the short cross wing, along the Wiertdijkje, a central rectangular bay window beneath a thatched hipped roof with glass-in-lead in the fanlights. Above the bay window a three-part window projecting through the roof. The right part of the south facade consists of a projecting building element with on the ground floor a double and six-paned window and on the right at the corner the entrance in a porch with masonry corner column. In the gable two double six-paned attic windows beneath the higher placed triangular small window. On the ground floor a double and single six-paned window and on the right at the corner the entrance porch with masonry corner column. The door with small window is located in the east facade with to the right of it a window strip running round the corner of five? square casement windows. On the weatherboarded part of the east facade (studio) the text: "Beat your swords into ploughshares" is mounted in iron letters. The north facade of the long wing consists almost entirely of a large 22-paned studio window with in the central door a ten-paned window to the garden. In the corner of both wings on the west side a small flat-roofed kitchen extension with in the north facade a door and six-paned window and in the west facade a three-part window with fanlights. The north facade of the short wing is almost blind except for a door partly inserted into the thatched roof leading to the flat roof of the kitchen and to the left of it a small diamond-paned window. The west facade of the short wing has a timber gable top decorated with figurative woodcarving and a slightly projecting attic window with four six-paned windows and between them a sundial. On the ground floor two rectangular windows with plain glass-in-lead.

The interior from the construction period is largely preserved in its original state. In the high studio a tiled floor and a roof truss structure with heavy cranked timbers, beams and iron tie-rods. On the corbels coats of arms of, among others, Bergen and Amsterdam. On the south wall of the studio a balcony with a balustrade executed in fine woodcarving which provides access to the bedrooms on the attic floor. In the studio, the adjoining sitting room and the living room in the short wing monumental fireplace sections in fair-faced masonry of red brick in ornamental masonry, decorated with woodcarving and sayings. From the studio a heavy round-arch-closed door provides access to the hall and staircase in the northwest corner of the house. In the plastered walls tiles with figures and sayings are incorporated in various places. On the attic floors partly built-in cupboards.

Valuation

The (former) artist's residence from 1927/1934 by artist Jan Ponstijn is of general importance on account of its cultural, architectural historical and typological value as a representative and both externally and internally exceptionally well-preserved artist's residence. Remarkable are the wooden sculptures and tiles executed by Ponstijn and artist Jan Voskuil. The property is characteristic of the artists' village Bergen and is situated in the vicinity of the Buerweg where several artists from the Bergen School lived and worked.
