(Former) BUS GARAGE 'Schalkwijk', with (originally) three UPPER DWELLINGS in functionalist style, built in 1932 to a design by D. Brouwer on behalf of Mr. Schalkwijk. N.B. The extension from 1954 on the west and north sides are of secondary importance.

Description

The building has a rectangular ground plan and comprises three storeys on the front facade under a flat roof and one storey on the rear under flat roofs with roof lights. The facades are rendered in white plaster, except for that of the extension from 1954 on the rear. The front facade is clad on the ground floor with black and white glazed tiles. On the front and side facades on the upper storeys predominantly windows and doors with steel frames, on the rear facade wooden frames.

On the front facade (S) on the left a semicircular projection and next to it, marking the set-back entrance section under a canopy, a tall projecting building component constructed from brown brick, largely clad with black tiles, rectangular in ground plan at right angles to the street, rising well above the flat roof. The large rectangular sealed openings of the former garage doors are (now filled with glass doors) and two doors with fanlights to the upper dwellings on either side are clad with black tiles, as is the buttress on the right corner of the facade. The semicircular projection has a plinth clad with black tiles and above it a continuous glass facade with steel glazing bars. The lower part of the facade is closed off by a broad frieze of small square white tiles beneath the continuous window strip with eighteen, partly opening, rectangular steel windows and a door on the first floor. The glass door opens onto the balcony with continuous wrought-iron railings above the projection. The window strip, which runs around the corner to the left, is interrupted twice by wall dividers laid in yellow brick. To the left of the semicircular projection the facade steps back slightly and in the corner the tall projecting corner section intersects the continuous horizontal window band. On the ground floor in the corner a third door under a far projecting canopy. On the second floor eight windows with pivoting windows.

The left side facade (W) has a plinth of black tiles and is divided in two by the rainwater downpipe. On the right, partly under the projecting canopy of the entrance section in the front facade, a narrow horizontal seven-paned window and above each other two windows with opening casements on the upper storeys.
