Inleiding

Introduction

Detached residential house 'Pannenhuys' situated on the corner of the Beatrixlaan and the Mr. Troelstrastraat in a suburban expansion district from the Interwar period northwest of the Tiel city centre. The house was built in 1930 according to a design by Amsterdam architect EDMOLD NIJSTEN on behalf of the HBS gymnastics teacher A. C. Sonneveldt. The name 'Pannenhuys' which occurred regularly during this period as a name for small villas, refers here to an old plot name. The residential house is stylistically aligned with the AMSTERDAM SCHOOL and is characterized by a compact main form with a striking roof and chimney, fine decorative window compositions and expressive brickwork. The house is in virtually original condition with regard to its exterior. It is surrounded on three sides by a garden, which is bounded on the street sides by a brick GARDEN WALL. On the Mr. Troelstrastraat there is in this wall a tubular steel SWING GATE with sun bars.

Description

Detached and partly cellared residential house on an almost square floor plan with a round-built bay window in the southwestern corner. The building has four asymmetrically arranged facades and comprises two storeys under a very high four-sided hipped roof. The roof is covered with glazed yellow and purple Tuile du Nord tiles, with round corner coping stones. The roof has a striking ridge crest. The hipped roof gables are drawn vertically across the facades at various points. Water drainage takes place via box gutters with a broad timber overhang, which runs along the vertical and horizontal roof edges. In the front and back hipped roof sections there is a triangular roof dormer with an undivided inward-sloping window. Both the right and left roof sections each have two such roof dormers. The chimney tapers towards the top and has a closure in the form of a rectangular cut-out filled with relief brickwork, a concrete capping piece and a recessed crest built in a different bond. The facades have a trash frame and are built up in brick in a variant of the Norwegian bond, whereby the headers are omitted every course. In combination with this, other (decorative) bonds and relief brickwork are applied. The windows have broad, white-painted timber frames and are predominantly divided into three with horizontal glazing bars. Decorative multi-pane windows are also used, filled with leaded glass.

The first storey of the FRONT FACADE on the Beatrixlaan is slightly built out and runs around the southeastern facade corner in the form of a semicircular bay window up to the high-built chimney. On the bay there is a balcony whose parapet is covered with a concrete slab. The bay is built in a sort of header bond and has a window composition running around the corner with a brick throating sill on a base with relief brickwork. The window composition consists of a continuous series of casement windows under an overhanging 63-pane fanlight, filled with leaded glass. The windows are separated by thick frame mullions which run behind the slightly projecting fanlight and carry the structure. The left facade section has a low rectangular window with a much larger projecting 30-pane fanlight, comparable with the bay window. To the left of this window an adjoining rectangular facade plane that protrudes beyond the facade, executed in stack bond with vertically laid bricks. Below the window a planter is built into the masonry. The windows and the balcony door on the upper floor are located under the roof overhang in a slightly recessed facade plane provided with relief brickwork. To the left the vertical roof overhang closes with a concrete sphere on the coping plate of the balcony. To the right are a balcony door and two casement windows within a frame. To the left are three casement windows.

Around the corner in the RIGHT SIDE FACADE two casement windows are provided. The right side facade is dominated by the centrally placed flush facade plane that borders the chimney on the right. To the right of this front the roof section runs low along the facade. Below the roof overhang here is a small toilet window. The flush-ended middle section contains the front door of the house and above it a six-pane window with leaded glass, for the stairwell. The semi-circular wooden panelled door is surrounded by a brick arch moulding, above which the name of the house is inscribed in decorative wrought-iron lettering in arch form. The door consists below of two large panels separated from each other by a very narrow strip of leaded glass. The upper half of the door is divided into wedge-shaped panels around a semi-circular closed viewing window. These radial lines are continued in the brick moulding. Between door and chimney a curved planter is built into the masonry.

Across the full width of the LEFT SIDE FACADE the roof is drawn low. The roof drawn low from the side facades continues briefly over the REAR FACADE, but is quickly raised here. Approximately in the middle of the first storey there are here two single-pane doors coupled together. To the right, against the frame of these doors, a renewed kitchen window adjoins. In the upper left of the first storey two square windows are provided. On the upper floor, on either side in the corner against the eaves line, there are two rectangular windows each with two casement windows.

The layout of the INTERIOR is virtually unchanged and consists of a hallway with on one side two rooms separated by sliding doors and on the other side kitchen and storage space. On the upper floor and in the roof space are bedrooms and a bathroom. The wooden staircase has a high, originally closed but now modified parapet.

The garden is bounded on the street side by a brick GARDEN WALL, in which on the Mr. Troelstrastraat is a tubular steel SWING GATE with sun bars.

Valuation

Detached RESIDENTIAL HOUSE 'Pannenhuys' with GARDEN WALL and SWING GATE built in 1930 according to a design by E. NIJSTEN

-Of architectural-historical value as a well-preserved and fine example of a detached residential house in Amsterdam School style, which stands out because of high-quality aesthetic qualities such as a compact main form with striking roof structure, chimney and bay window which together with the boundary definition form a fine corner solution. Furthermore, the building possesses window compositions typical for the style and alternating brickwork in varying bonds. The building is hereby a valuable example of the occurrence of Amsterdam School style in the province.

-Of urban planning value owing to its location on the corner of the Beatrixlaan and the Mr. Troelstrastraat, where, due to the corner-oriented main form and striking appearance, it plays an important role in determining the streetscape.
