Inleiding.

Introduction.

The Neo-Gothic PARSONAGE from 1856 lies to the east of the church.

Description.

The two-storey building under a hipped roof with moulded cornice has a square ground plan and comprises three bays in both the length and width directions. It has an extension at the rear and a recent extension at the west facade. It is built of machine-made brick with some natural stone elements and stucco ornaments. The hipped roof is laid with dull-finish Tuile du Nord tiles. A pair of octagonal chimneys of stuccoed brickwork projects from the roof ridge. The south, west and east facades have a projecting middle bay that runs above the roof edge and ends in a pointed spout gable. All four corner pilasters are provided per storey with Neo-Gothic stuccoed mouldings and trefoils. This with the exception of the north-east corner pilaster, where the mouldings are absent at the level of the ground floor; presumably because of an earlier extension. Lightly ornamented wall anchors are present both at the height of the first floor and at the height of the attic storey. Around the perimeter a stuccoed moulded plinth has been applied. All windows consist of Tudor arch windows, above which stuccoed eyebrow arches have been applied. The sills are of natural stone. The iron frames with casements, which were installed after the Second World War, follow the original wooden glazing bars. Only in the stairwell is an original wooden frame still present. A pair of painted false windows is located in the north facade. The most eastern one is intersected by the gabled roof of the extension. The section that lies beneath the roof is still provided with the original decoration depicting curtains and tassels. A pair of windows in the west facade on the first floor has been blocked. The front door, consisting of a wooden panelled door under a four-part fanlight with stuccoed eyebrow arch, is located centrally in the east facade and is accessed via three steps. The fanlight is filled with stained glass windows. The exterior door in the west facade, which in the interior comes out under the stairwell, is at ground level and formerly gave access to the (now removed) passage to the church building. This door now borders the 1997 extension, which falls outside the protected area. The rear door has a fanlight under a Tudor arch, set with a stained glass window.

The layout of the interior, both on the ground floor and on the first floor and attic, is unchanged. The stairwell with oak stair and balustrade is still original. In the corridor are laid natural stone tiles in sand. The ceilings in the corridor are still provided with Neo-Gothic stucco-work. The same applies to the ceilings in the back and a front room as well as in a back room on the first floor. The Neo-Gothic panelled doors are set in door frames with rounded corners. The north-east corner of the building is undercellared. The cellar possesses two intersecting barrel vaults and a water well. The cellar floors are laid with ceramic tiles in sand. In the cellar is a water well.

On the large open attic the original roof trusses are partly provided with mortise-and-tenon joints and partly connected with nails. The single-storey extension with gabled roof at the rear presumably has an older origin than the parsonage, but dates in its present appearance in traditional-artisanal style from the interwar period. The building is built of machine-made brick and the roof is laid with Tuile du Nord tiles. In the long facade a four of closed rectangular windows are placed with two-part wooden frames under four-light fanlights. All frames are provided with shutters. In the cross gable that projects along the parsonage, a single window has been placed. At the far right in the gable is a wooden door under a segmental arch. Centrally in the rear side gable a wooden door is placed under a round arch, which is flanked on both sides by a row of three small closed rectangular windows. On the first floor is a wooden loading door under a round arch. On the attic we find the aforementioned painted fragment of a false window.

Valuation.

The object is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an early expression of Catholic emancipation. It has architectural-historical value as a good and early example of Neo-Gothic architecture. It has group value because of the functional coherence with the church, which enjoys protection as a national monument. The object has been preserved in particularly good condition, notably the rare window decoration and the original elements, and is relatively rare as an example of a Neo-Gothic parsonage.
