Inleiding

Introduction

The URSULA CHAPEL is the former convent chapel of the now-demolished St. Ursula Convent. The chapel is situated somewhat set back from the Voogdijstraat and was built in neo-Gothic style to the design of architect Jos Cuypers in 1905. Behind the sacristy, an extension was realised around 1980 and after the demolition of the convent, the two-storey cloister walk was sealed off.

Description

The URSULA CHAPEL has a predominantly rectangular ground plan under a gabled roof and half-hipped roofs with slates in Maas-bond pattern.

The facades have a natural stone plinth and ashlar of red bricks in English bond. The facades contain pointed arch windows with coloured leaded glass and wooden rectangular doors with wrought-iron fittings. The chapel consists of a nave with side aisles, an apse between two small niches and a gallery.

To the right behind the apse is the sacristy and in front of the church entrance is a portico.

The FRONT FACADE of the chapel is symmetrical in composition and has on the far left the former passage to the convent, for which a ramp has been installed. The portico with dog-tooth moulding under the half-hipped roof has in the facade two two-part windows, on either side of a projecting facade surface with the recessed entrance. To the right of the portico is a set-back bay with two-part window and connects here to the building on the right. The entrance lies under a gable with ashlar coping stone and cross, three pointed arch niches above drip moulding and brackets and has a double wooden door with decorative fittings and handle located under a relief with St. Angela by sculptor J. Thissen, Roermond, 1906. On either side of the entrance are two ashlar stones with text "Christus vincit regnat imperat - Die VII apr posuit - Jos. Nub. Ep. Rur." and "Sa Crat IssIOo CorDI tILIar San Ctur Angelae".

Above the half-hipped roof is a band of yellow and red brick under drip moulding. A five-part pointed arch window with trefoils and fish-blade ornaments. The facade with buttresses on either side is terminated by a gable with courses and a niche with statue. The gable is topped with ashlar coping stone and finials.

The LEFT SIDE FACADE consists of eight bays separated by buttresses with ashlar coping stones. The side aisle on the first storey lies under a half-hipped roof and has a three-part window. The windows above it in the nave are two-part. The right bay, next to the former cloister walk is higher and lies under a flat roof.

On the facade at the second storey are three pointed arch windows. Behind the nave stands the five-sided apse whose windows are sealed. Behind the side aisles and around the apse is a single-storey volume under half-hipped roofs. These are the original sacristies and a passage around the apse. The facade contains two- and three-part windows and original wooden doors with fittings and fanlights.

Against these original volumes stands the non-original extension of the sacristy.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE is identical to the left side facade with the exception of the heightening in the first bay.

The INTERIOR of the chapel is partly whitewashed and partly in exposed brickwork, of which the ashlar is in red brick and the vaults in yellow. The NAVE is separated from the side aisles by moulded pointed arches on moulded square brick columns. Before each column stands a base with bevelled faces on which a shaft stands that ends in a console with leaf motif. Above this are the ribs of the ribbed vault, which support the ceiling.

Where the ribs meet are small reliefs with cherubs.

Under the windows in the nave are small blind niches.

The SIDE AISLES have groin vaults and originally formed part of the cloister walks.

The APSE is separated from the nave by a large pointed arch. At the corners of the sides of the apse stand the same shafts as under the ribs of the ribbed vault.

The GALLERY is also separated from the nave by a high pointed arch and has a wooden balustrade.

The coloured leaded glass features various representations of flowers.

VALUABLE INTERIOR COMPONENTS include among others the leaded glass windows and the authentic doors.
