Inleiding
Het voormalige LAGERE SCHOOL, het "Klein College" met inpandige BOVENMEESTERSWONING is gelegen in de gesloten straatwand van de Munsterstraat en is gebouwd in 1890 in neo-Renaissance. In 1993 is de oorspronkelijk asymmetrische U-vormige school verbouwd tot zeven appartementen. Het oorspronkelijke schoolplein is grotendeels gehandhaafd.
Omschrijving
De SCHOOL met BOVENMEESTERSWONING heeft een asymmetrische U-vormige plattegrond in twee bouwlagen onder diverse schild- en zadeldaken met leien en nokpironnen. Het pand heeft een opstand van baksteen in kruisverband met een risalerende natuursteen plint. Verder speklagen, decoratieve balkankers en cordonlijsten. In de gevels bevinden zich rechthoekige houten kozijnen met bovenlicht in rond- en segmentboogvormige lijsten met profielsteen, aanzet- en sluitstenen, natuursteen dorpels en vulstukken met diverse afbeeldingen van dieren, planten, fruit, etc. Onder de vensters in de tweede laag en in de topgevels bevinden zich twee cordonlijsten waartussen rechthoekige nissen met diverse afbeeldingen.
De VOORGEVEL is het rijk gedecoreerd, symmetrisch van opbouw en bestaat uit zeven traveeën met in elke travee een venster. De twee buitenste traveeën eindigen in een topgevel met onderaan de top en bij de nok twee treden. In de topgevel bevinden zich twee boven elkaar gelegen vensters onder een fronton en tussen rondboogvormige nissen. De middelste drie traveeën liggen iets verdiept en hebben centraal een poort onder een gedeeltelijk getrapte wimberg met decoratieve plaquette met "Klein College".
In de tweede laag boven de entree bevindt zich een beeld.
In de POORT is de plint gecementeerd en in de achtergevel bevindt zich rechts een steen met de tekst "Onder de bescherming van den H. Jozef. F. Boermans 14 april 1890", waarnaast de entree tot de voormalige bovenmeesterswoning.
De ACHTERGEVEL van de school heeft een segmentvormige boog als beëindiging van de poort en in de tweede laag twee niet originele vensters in een getoogde nis en bloktanddecoraties onder de goot. Links hiervan bevindt zich de nieuwbouw.
Rechts bevindt zich de ZIJGEVEL van het oorspronkelijke achtergelegen volume van de school. Deze heeft links twee gevelvlakken met per laag drie vensters in getoogde nissen, waarin vlechtwerk van diverse kleuren baksteen en geheel rechts nog een identiek vensters per laag.
Deze gevelvlakken worden gescheiden door lisenen. Tegen het middelste venster van het tweede gevelvlak bevindt zich de loopbrug naar de nieuwbouw.
Tegen dit oorspronkelijke volume is een nieuwe achtergevel geplaatst.
De STRUCTUUR van het INTERIEUR is in tact en als school nog duidelijk herkenbaar aanwezig.
Waardering
De SCHOOL met BOVENMEESTERSWONING, het Klein College, bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van scholenbouw aan het eind van de negentiende eeuw. The SCHOOL with HEADMASTER'S RESIDENCE has an asymmetrical U-shaped floor plan in two storeys under various hipped and gabled roofs with slate and ridge tiles. The building has a facade of brickwork in Flemish bond with a projecting natural stone plinth. Furthermore speckled courses, ornamental wall anchors and string courses. The facades contain rectangular wooden cross windows with fanlights in round and segmental arch-shaped frames with dressed stone, jamb and quoin stones, natural stone sills and filling pieces with various depictions of animals, plants, fruit, etc. Below the windows in the second storey and in the gable tops there are two string courses between which rectangular niches with various depictions.
The FRONT FACADE is richly decorated, symmetrical in composition and consists of seven bays with a window in each bay. The two outer bays end in a gable top with at the foot of the top and at the ridge two steps. In the gable top there are two windows located one above the other under a pediment and between round arch-shaped niches. The middle three bays are slightly recessed and have centrally a doorway under a partially stepped spout gable with decorative plaque with "Klein College".
In the second storey above the entrance is a sculpture.
In the DOORWAY the plinth is cemented and in the rear facade to the right is a stone with the text "Under the protection of Saint Joseph. F. Boermans 14 april 1890", next to which is the entrance to the former headmaster's residence.
The REAR FACADE of the school has a segmental arch as the termination of the doorway and in the second storey two non-original windows in an arched niche and block dentil decoration under the eaves. To the left of this is new construction.
To the right is the SIDE FACADE of the original rear volume of the school. This has on the left two facade surfaces with three windows per storey in arched niches, containing brickwork in various coloured patterns and at the far right still an identical window per storey.
