Inleiding
Halfvrijstaand postkantoor gesitueerd op een hoek van het Kloosterwandplein. Het postkantoor werd gebouwd in 1907 naar een ontwerp van het bureau van Rijksbouwmeester Knuttel. De bouwstijl verraadt Berlagiaanse invloeden.
Het postkantoor werd verschillende malen verbouwd, met name delen van het interieur en de achtergevel.
Omschrijving
Halfvrijstaand POSTKANTOOR op een L-vormige plattegrond. De korte gevel t.w. het bouwdeel gelegen aan de Kloosterwandstraat telt twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met Hollandse pannen. De hoekpartij loopt uit in drie bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een schilddak. Het bouwdeel aan de pleinzijde telt twee bouwlagen en wordt weer afgedekt met een zadeldak met hollandse pannen. Het hoekdeel aan de pleinzijde loopt uit in drie bouwlagen afgedekt met een schilddak. De afsluitende torenbouw wordt afgedekt met een tentdak met Hollandse pannen.
Onder de dakranden spitsboogfriezen. De uitbouwen aan de achtergevel worden afgedekt met een plat dak.
Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen deels geglazuurd, en hardsteen. Rechthoekige houten vensters met bovenlichten met kleine roedeverdeling. Vensters met groen geglazuurde dorpelstenen en hardstenen lateien. Aan de benedenzijde van de vensters in de eerste bouwlaag een doorlopende waterlijst in groen geglauurde baksteen.
Gevel KLOOSTERWANDSTRAATZIJDE.
Symmetrische gevelindeling. In het middendeel van de eerste bouwlaag bevondt zich oorspronkelijk de hoofdingang. In 1988 werd hier een geldemissie-automaat geplaatst. De oude hoofdgang bevindt zich in een decoratieve hardstenen omlijsting met aan de bovenzijde een Florentijnse boog in hardsteen. Aan de rechterzijde van de geldautomaat is een oorspronkelijke rechthoekige houten deur aanwezig. Hardstenen middenstijl en bovenlichtomlijsting. Vierkante glas-in-lood bovenlichten. In het vulstuk een tegeltableau met afbeeldingen van het Nederlandse Wapen en van planten en bloemen. Aan weerszijden van de oude hoofdingang dubbele hoge vensters. In de tweede bouwlaag drie dubbele vensters met bovenlichten. Middengeveldeel uitlopend in een topgevelachtige dakkapel met hierin een driedelig venster met rondboogvormig geleed bovenlicht.
Aanzetten van de dakkapel geaccentueerd met hardsteen. Dakkapel met zadeldak met Hollandse pannen. Dakrand van de dakkapel eveneens met hardsteen bekleed. Aan weerszijden van de dakkapel twee kleine dakkapellen met dubbele venstertjes.
HOEKPARTIJ Kloosterwandstraat/Kloosterwandplein: geveldeel is asymmetrisch ingedeeld. In de eerste bouwlaag resp. drie smalle vensters; in de afgeronde hoek twee smalle vensters; aan de pleinzijde twee grote vensters.
In de tweede bouwlaag in de afgeronde hoek een groot balkon rustend op twee grote consoles deels uitgevoerd in hardsteen, en een kleine console midden onder het balkon. Decoratief smeedijzeren balkonhek. De uiteinden van het balkon afgesloten met getrapte muurtjes met hardsteen accenten. Dubbele houten balkondeur met bovenlicht met roedeverdeling. In de derde bouwlaag aan de bovenzijde van het balkon een uurwerk in een hardstenen vierkanten omlijsting. Aan de bovenzijde van het uurwerk een tegeltableau met het jaartal 1907 en een bekroning bestaande uit twee hardstenen leeuwen die een wapenschild vasthouden. Aan de benedenzijde van het uurwerk twee hardstenen pilastervormige consoles. Het gevelvlak aan de rechterzijde van het uurwerk heeft een deels schuin aflopende gevelrand met een beëindiging in de vorm van een hardstenen uil. In dit gevelvlak een rechthoekig venster met roedeverdeling.
Het gevelvlak aan de linkerzijde van het uurwerk heeft een rechthoekige afsluiting met een hardstenen kolom als beëindiging.
LANGE GEVELZIJDE KLOOSTERWANDPLEIN.
Het middendeel van deze lange gevel t.w. het bouwdeel in twee bouwlagen telt in de eerste bouwlaag vier maal per drie gekoppelde vensters met bovenlichten met roedeverdeling. In het linkerdeel van dit gevelvlak twee hardstenen vierkante brievenbussen met aan de bovenzijde bovenlichten met roedeverdeling. In de tweede bouwlaag van deze gevel aan de rechterzijde twee dubbele vensters met bovenlichten. Aan de linkerzijde twee maal per drie gekoppelde vensters met daartussen twee gekoppelde vensters. In het dakvlak van het middendeel van de pleingevel twee topgevelachtige dakkapellen met eenzelfde vormgeving als de dakkapel aan de Kloosterwandstraat.
Het hoekdeel aan de pleinzijde bestaat uit een torenachtig bouwdeel in drie bouwlagen met tentdak bekroond met een nokpion.
Aan de rechterzijde van deze torenbouw een geveldeel in drie bouwlagen met aan de rechterzijde een schuin aflopende dakrand.
In dit laatste bouwdeel bevindt zich thans de hoofdingang. Deze dateert van omstreeks 1984. aan weerszijden van deze ingang een dubbel venster met boevnlichten. In de tweede bouwlaag van dit geveldeel drie dubbele vensters. In het middendeel van de derde bouwlaag drie kleine gekoppelde vensters. De schuin aflopende dakrand heeft een beëindiging in de vorm van een hardstenen kolom. De torenbouw heeft in de eerste bouwlaag vier rechthoekige dubbel vensters met roedeverdeling. In de tweede bouwlaag drie gekoppelde vensters met bovenlichten. In de derde bouwlaag een klein rechthoekig venster met roedeverdeling. Aan de bovenzijde van dit venster twee decoratieve smeedijzeren muurankers. Dit geveldeel met diverse accenten in hardsteen.In de linkerzijgevel van de torenbouw in de derde bouwlaag een smal rechthoekig venster met roedeverdeling en een de bovenzijde twee muurankers.
Aan de LINKERZIJGEVEL van de torenbouw een steunbeerachtig geveldeel in twee bouwlagen en voorzien van een lessenaarsdak.
Dit laatste bouwdeel is voorzien van een na-oorlogse aanbouw in een bouwlaag. Deze aanbouw is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Het steunbeerachtig geveldeel sluit aan op een uitbouw in tweeëneenhalve bouwlaag afgedekt met een schilddak met Hollandse pannen bekroond met een nokpion. In de linkerzijgevel van deze uitbouw drie kleine dubbele vensters met roedeverdeling.
ACHTERGEVEL LANGE VLEUGEL PLEINZIJDE De achtergevel is voorzien van een aanbouw in één deels anderhalve bouwlaag met plat dak. Aan de voorzijde van de uitbouw in een bouwlaag een luifel die dateert van omstreeks 1984. De vierkante aluminium kozijnen in de uitbouw van anderhalve bouwlaag dateren van omstreeks 1990.
ACHTERGEVEL KORTE VLEUGEL AAN KLOOSTERWANDSTRAAT Aan deze achtergevel een uitbouw in tweeëneenhalve bouwlaag met plat dak. Deze uitbouw is voorzien van een aanbouw in een bouwlaag met plat dak die dateert van omstreeks 1984.
Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer het volgende van belang.
In de grote hal waar zich thans de balies bevinden hoge gemetselde segmentbogen in schoonmetselwerk in twee tinten gele baksteen. Het postkantoor is cultuurhistorisch van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling in de architectuur van openbare gebouwen in het eerste kwart van de twintigste eeuw. Het pand bezit architectuurhistorische waarden wegens het bijzondere belang voor de bovenreginale geschiedenis van de architectuur, als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van het bureau van Rijksbouwmeester Ir. D.E.C. Knuttel, wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en de bijzondere ornamentiek. On either side of the old main entrance double tall windows. On the second storey three double windows with fanlights. Middle facade section terminating in a gable-like dormer window with a three-part window within it featuring a rounded-arch glazed fanlight.

CORNER SECTION Kloosterwandstraat/Kloosterwandplein: facade section asymmetrically arranged. On the first storey respectively three narrow windows; on the rounded corner two narrow windows; on the square side two large windows.
On the second storey on the rounded corner a large balcony resting on two large consoles partly executed in hard stone, and a small console in the middle beneath the balcony. Decorative wrought-iron balcony railing. The ends of the balcony closed off with stepped walls with hard stone accents. Double wooden balcony door with fanlight with glazing bars. On the third storey at the top of the balcony a clock face in a hard stone square surround. At the top of the clock face a tile tableau with the year 1907 and a crowning consisting of two hard stone lions holding a coat of arms. At the bottom of the clock face two hard stone pilaster-form consoles. The facade panel to the right of the clock face has a partly sloping facade edge ending in the form of a hard stone owl. In this facade panel a rectangular window with glazing bars.
