Inleiding
Vrijstaand HERENHUIS gebouwd in 1888 in opdracht van de familie Romen-Wijking. De toegepaste bouwstijl is traditionalistisch met invloeden van het Eclecticisme.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaand herenhuis in twee bouwlagen onder een zadeldak met Hollandse pannen. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen en hardsteen. Vensters van omstreeks 1990.
Symmetrische indeling voorgevel. In de voorgevel een speklaag in donker bruin geglazuurde baksteen. Middendeel voorgevel iets vooruitspringend met hierin de hoofdentree in een rondboogvormig portiek met toegangstrap met vier hardstenen treden. Aan weerszijden toegangstrap een smeedijzeren leuning. Authentieke houten voordeur met rondboogvormig bovenlicht. Vooruitspringend middenvoorgeveldeel uitlopend in een doorlopend torenachtig geveldeel met tuitvormig dak met shingles.
Voorgevel met hardstenen plint met rustica. Vensters met doorlopende hardstenen dorpelstenen. In de zônes aan benedenzijde van de vensters tegeltableaus. Vensters eerste bouwlaag met rondboogvormige omlijsting. In deze omlijsting ter hoogte van de bovenlichten hardstenen aanzet- en sluitstenen.
Vensters tweede bouwlaag met dito segmentboogvormige omlijsting.
Bakstenen gootconsoles met hiertussen kleine tegeltableaus.
In de derde bouwlaag torenachtig geveldeel twee kleine rondboogvormige vensters met doorlopende hardstenen dorpel met aan benedenzijde twee kleine tegeltableaus.
Voorgeveldakvlak met zes dakvensters van omstreeks 1990.
Rechterzijgevel met brandtrap van omstreeks 1990 en op elke verdieping een vluchtdeur eveneens van omstreeks 1990.
Rechterzijgevel uitlopend in een topgevel met hierin vleilagen.
Aan de rechterzijgevel een klein muurgedeelte aangebouwd met hierin een segmentboogvormig poortje.
In de achtergevel segmentboogvormige keldervensters met hardstenen dorpelstenen. Keldervensters voorzien van traliewerk van omstreeks 1990. Tussen twee keldervensters de eerste steen ingemetseld gedateerd 1 mei 1888.
Achtergevel met rechthoekige houten vensters van omstreeks 1990 met segmentboogvormige bovenlichten. Middendeel achtergevel vooruitspringend en uitlopend in een topgevel met hierin een ronde blinde nis en vleilagen. In de eerste bouwlaag van dit vooruitspringend geveldeel een rechthoekige houten deur.
Tegen dit middendeel van de achtergevel een aangebouwde houten erker met plat dak. Erker rust op twee gietijzeren kolommen.
Decoratief metselwerk onder de dakrand. Achtergeveldakvlak met twee dakkapellen van omstreeks 1990.
Erfscheiding bestaande uit een lage muur met ezelsrug met hierin een poort met twee hoge baksteen kolommen met bolbekroning.
De structuur van het INTERIEUR is vrijwel in tact. Van het INTERIEUR is het volgende onder meer van belang.
In de eerste bouwlaag de gangvloer met tegels in witte en zwarte marmer; authentieke houten paneeldeuren met aan bovenzijde een gestucte kroonlijst met hierin een medaillon met vrouwenhoofd; in de gang een gestucte segmentboog rustend op pilasters met hierin consoles in de vorm van een vrouwenhoofd. In enkele kamers in de eerste bouwlaag een marmeren haardomlijsting.
Authentieke trap met gietijzeren spijlen en houten handlijst.
Waardering
Het herenhuis is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling in de architectuur van herenhuizen uit het laatste kwart van de 19de eeuw.
Het herenhuis bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het pand aan de situering aan de Kapellerlaan. De Kapellerlaan is met haar villa- en herenhuisbebouwing als geheel van belang voor de ontwikkeling en het aanzien van Roermond.
Het herenhuis is van belang wegens de architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en een deel van het interieur, en de redelijke mate van architectuurhistorische en typologische zeldzaamheid.

Central section of front facade projecting slightly, containing the main entrance in a semicircular arched portico with access staircase of four ashlar stone steps. On either side of the access staircase a wrought-iron handrail. Authentic wooden front door with semicircular arched fanlight. Projecting central facade section extending into a continuous tower-like facade element with spout-shaped roof with shingles.
Front facade with ashlar stone plinth with rustication. Windows with continuous ashlar stone sill stones. In the zones below the windows tile panels. Windows of first storey with semicircular arched surround. In this surround at the height of the fanlights ashlar stone springer and keystone.
Windows of second storey with similar segmental arched surround.
Brick gutter consoles with small tile panels between them.
In the third storey tower-like facade element two small semicircular arched windows with continuous ashlar stone sill with below it two small tile panels.

In the back facade segmental arched basement windows with ashlar stone sill stones. Basement windows fitted with ironwork from circa 1990. Between two basement windows the foundation stone set dated 1 May 1888.
Back facade with rectangular wooden windows from circa 1990 with segmental arched fanlights. Central section of back facade projecting and extending into a gable containing a circular blind niche and layering. In the first storey of this projecting facade section a rectangular wooden door.
Against this central section of the back facade an attached wooden bay window with flat roof. Bay window rests on two cast-iron columns.

In some rooms in the first storey a marble fireplace surround.

Appreciation
The townhouse has cultural-historical value as a remarkable expression of a typological development in the architecture of townhouses from the last quarter of the 19th century.
The townhouse possesses architectural-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design, the distinctive use of materials and the ornamentation. Ensemble value derives from its siting on the Kapellerlaan. The Kapellerlaan with its villa and townhouse development is of importance as a whole for the development and character of Roermond.
The townhouse is of significance because of the architectural integrity of the exterior and part of the interior, and the reasonable degree of architectural-historical and typological rarity.
