Inleiding

Introduction

Since the School Decree of 1880, the State Government imposed stricter quality requirements on school building with a lower number of children per classroom. Architects were of the opinion that a school should distinguish itself from its surroundings by a simple yet dignified appearance, preferably in neo-Romanesque or neo-Renaissance style. These often richly decorated school buildings were designed in the province of Utrecht by architects such as A. Nijland and E.G. Wentink.

A. Nijland received a commission from the municipality of Loenen in 1891 to design a SCHOOL BUILDING with four classrooms as a public primary school. The foundation stone for the school building in neo-Renaissance style was laid on 1 August 1891 by C.S. van Beusekom, aged 9 years. In 1969-1970 the school was converted into a fire station, whereby the three windows in the right part of the front facade were replaced by a wide arched glazed door. In 1998 the building was converted into three apartments, whereby the main form and detailing of the exterior were largely preserved. During this conversion, dormer windows were placed on the front and rear sides. On the former school playground in front of the school at the Rijksstraatweg stands a Wilhelminaboom, a red beech planted in 1898. The cast-iron fencing by the tree is in storage. The school building is situated within the protected village view in the centre of Loenen with in the immediate vicinity the former town hall and the post and telegraph office.

Description

The school building, set back from the road, has a T-shaped floor plan with a transversely placed volume on the street side and a volume placed at right angles to it on the rear side. The building consists of one storey under a composite roof, covered with dampened boule tiles. On the front side is a hipped roof with the ridge parallel to the road with in the middle a gable of the gatehouse above the entrance section. On either side of the gatehouse is an arched dormer window with cross-windows placed. On the rear side is a bevelled hipped roof with two dormer windows.

The facades are built in brick in stretcher bond with a tooled plinth and drip moulding at the height of the window sills and a bead moulding with tooled consoles under the eaves. Sandstone banding accentuates the front facade. Above the window and door openings are arched lintels or relieving arches with decorative natural stone impost and keystone. The transversely placed volume is plastered on the rear side, as are the side facades of the volume placed at right angles. The plasterwork is textured with a reed brush.

The front facade (southwest side) is symmetrically arranged with in the middle a projecting gable section crowned by a stepped gable. On the ground floor is a double door with panes under a segmental arched fanlight, flanked by a blind window and on the storey a four-pane window. Below right is the foundation stone set in with the text: "The foundation stone laid by C.S. van Beusekom aged 9 years 1 Aug. 1891". The stepped gable is crowned by a wrought-iron weathervane.

To the left of the central projection are three arched nine-pane sash windows. On the right side is a wide three-part glazed door under a segmental arched fanlight. The stiles of the original windows are moulded.

The left side facade of the transversely placed volume is blind. The right side facade contains a door with two-pane fanlight. On the rear side in the rear gable of the transversely placed volume are placed right and left a six-pane sash window. The side facades of the volume placed at right angles contain on the right two doors with a two-pane fanlight and on the left a six-pane sash window and a door with two-pane fanlight. In the rear gable are twice three arched nine-pane sash windows.

Valuation

The building is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as an example of a late nineteenth-century school building, built in neo-Renaissance style, as well as because of the intact main form and detailing of the exterior. Furthermore, it is valuable because of its place within the oeuvre of architect A. Nijland. Finally, it is of urban planning value because of its striking situation on the Rijksstraatweg with the former school playground in front of the school on which stands a Wilhelminaboom from 1898.
