Omschrijving onderdeel 1:

Description of component 1:

HOUSE DE VELHORST.

The present country house originated from a 17th-century moated spieker which in 1741 was partially demolished and broadened and raised at the front to a building with a basement, two storeys and a roof structure. The middle bay was extended on three sides. Due to the broadening of the old spieker the moat had to be filled in. A stone in the pavement recalls this building phase with 'E. Van Löben Sels en P.C. Op ten Noort haec otia f 1741'. The house was extended to the rear in 1819 to form a block-shaped building. The central section was raised with an attic. The interior finishing followed in 1829. It now presents itself as a rectangular brick building with angle pilasters and two storeys on a high basement; continuous hipped roof with four corner chimneys and covered with laid pantiles. On the front and the first bay on the left and right sides the 18th-century brickwork has herringbone courses in the header courses. The rear facade and the last two bays of the left and right side facades are built of slightly redder brick. The windows also differ. The 18th-century windows have a light arch at the top; the 19th-century windows are straight across at the top. The symmetrical front facade (east) dates from 1741. Five bays wide with a three-sided projecting central section and a small porch with wrought iron balustrade, accessed via five round steps in sandstone. The decoration of the entrance section with porch and double-glazed front door with semicircular fanlight, provided with spoked bars, dates from 1819, as does the arrangement of the windows. Two types of blinds. The coarser ones probably date from the 18th, the finer ones from the 19th century. The central section above the gutter line was built up in 1819 as an attic in brick with three paired small semicircular windows. The early 19th-century rear facade has five bays. It contains the access for the staff. Both side facades have three bays, one with 18th-century and two with 19th-century windows. In the roof slates a simple roof dormer. The interior layout is as follows. On the basement storey are the original kitchens, a room with a heating place for the staff and storage cellars. Barrel vaults on wooden beams under the porch and the hall. On the piano nobile a grand hall. Floor with plates of marble and red sandstone. On the ceiling ornamentation with almond-shaped moulding with floral centrepiece, all from 1829. Stuccoed panels on the walls. Behind on the right is the large hall. On the ceiling lavish floral stucco work within eight-sided moulding. Centrepiece with geometric moulding and flower garlands, all from 1829. Fireplace niche provided with stucco work with grapes. Broad wooden floorboards. The windows are provided with window seats and interior shutters. On the right front a salon (the Hunting Room) with a stucco ceiling with almond-shaped moulding and round central section, all 1829. Fireplace niche provided with stucco work with foliage and arrow. Windows with flat interior shutters and window seats. In the hall opposite the front door, a staircase leads upwards, set in a round arch. The middle room on the upper floor has a stucco ceiling with almond-shaped moulding, geometric panels and a round centrepiece with leaf motif. In the corners fan-shaped patterns, all 1829. The room on the right front has a stucco ceiling with almond-shaped moulding and stars in the corners, all from 1829. Fireplace niche. Against the wall with the middle room former bed recesses. The room on the right rear has a stucco ceiling with oval moulding and a fireplace niche. The middle room at the rear has a stucco ceiling with straight moulding and rosettes on the corners. The rooms on the left have been renovated. The roof structure dates from 1819. A servants' room with a bed alcove has been fitted out on the attic floor. Ceiling of beadwork.
