Vrijstaande Mariakapel gesitueerd op een perceel op de hoek van de Kapelstraat en de bergstraat in de kern Buggenum. De kapel werd gebouwd in 1899. De toegepaste bouwstijl is traditionalistisch met elementen van de Neogotiek.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande Mariakapel op een rechthoekige plattegrond. De kapel telt één bouwlaag en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met leien. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen, deels geglazuurde baksteen, en hardsteen. Spitsboogvormige glas-in-lood vensters. Symmetrische indeling VOORGEVEL. Plint geaccentueerd met band geglazuurde baksteen. Rechthoekige dubbele houten deur met smeedijzeren beslag. Deur met spitsboogvormig bovenlicht met glas-in-lood met tracering in natuursteen, Aan weerszijden van de deur een steunbeer afgedekt met geglazuurde baksteen. Gevels met wit gepleisterde speklagen. Voorgevel uitlopend in een topgevel met hierin een horizontale band decoratief metselwerk. In de topgevel van de voorgevel vijf blinde spitsboogvormige venstertjes. In het middelste venster een houten luikje. Blinde vensters met doorlopende hardstenen dorpelsteen. Topgevel met hardstenen afdeklaag en bekroond met hardstenen pinakel. LINKER- EN RECHTERZIJGEVEL met elk twee spitsboogvormige glas-in-lood vensters en drie steunberen met afdekking van geglazuurde baksteen. Decoratief metselwerk onder de dakrand. Aan de ACHTERZIJDE van de kapel een driezijdige absis met schilddak met leien. In elke zijde van de absis een spitsboogvormig venster. Het middelste venster is blind, beide andere vensters met glas-in-lood. De drie gevelvlakken gescheiden door een steunbeer met afdekking in geglazuurde baksteen. Decoratief metselwerk onder de dakrand. Topgevel achterzijde van de kapel met eveneens hardstenen afdeklaag en bekroond met een hardstenen pinakel. Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer het volgende van belang. Plafond met spitsboog gewelven. Spitsbogen rusten op gestucte consoles. Vensters in een omlijsting van rode baksteen. Bakstenen altaar mdet hierop een houten Maria-beeld afkomstig uit het atelier Cuypers-Stoltzenberg te Roermond. Het Mariabeeld dateert uit 1898. Authentieke houten kerkbanken. Aan de voorzijde van de kapel een klein bordes met vier bakstenen treden en een hellingbaan van omstreeks 1990.
Waardering
De Maria-kapel is van bovenregionale cultuurhistorische waarde als uitdrukking van een culturele en geestelijke ontwikkeling in de architectuur van devotiekapellen in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw. Architectuurhistorische waarden ontleent de kapel aan het toegepaste bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek alsmede vanwege de verfijnde uitvoering van het metselwerk en de detaillering, als proeven van het historisch ambacht. De kapel is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de gaafheid van in- en exterieur en de typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.

The building material applied is brickwork, partly glazed brickwork, and stone. Pointed-arch-shaped glass-in-lead windows. Symmetrical arrangement FRONT FACADE. Plinth accentuated with a band of glazed brickwork. Rectangular double wooden door with wrought-iron fittings. Door with pointed-arch-shaped fanlight with glass-in-lead with tracery in natural stone. On either side of the door a buttress covered with glazed brickwork. Facades with whitewashed ashlar courses. Front facade ending in a stepped gable with therein a horizontal band of decorative brickwork. In the stepped gable of the front facade five blind pointed-arch-shaped small windows. In the middle window a wooden shutter. Blind windows with continuous stone sill. Stepped gable with stone cap and crowned with stone pinnacle. LEFT AND RIGHT SIDE FACADES each with two pointed-arch-shaped glass-in-lead windows and three buttresses with covering of glazed brickwork. Decorative brickwork below the eaves. At the REAR of the chapel a three-sided apse with hipped roof with slates. In each side of the apse a pointed-arch-shaped window. The middle window is blind, the other two windows with glass-in-lead. The three facade surfaces separated by a buttress with covering in glazed brickwork. Decorative brickwork below the eaves. Stepped gable rear of the chapel with likewise stone cap and crowned with a stone pinnacle. Of the INTERIOR the following is notably important. Ceiling with pointed-arch vaults. Pointed arches rest on stuccoed corbels. Windows in a surround of red brickwork. Brick altar with thereon a wooden Mary statue from the workshop Cuypers-Stoltzenberg at Roermond. The Mary statue dates from 1898. Authentic wooden church benches. In front of the chapel a small landing with four brick steps and a ramp of approximately 1990.
Valuation
The Mary chapel is of supra-regional cultural-historical value as an expression of a cultural and spiritual development in the architecture of devotion chapels in the second half of the 19th century.
