The register's description

TUINHUISJE, in neogotische stijl, vervaardigd omstreeks 1830.

- Van cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een ontwikkeling die is verbonden met het verpozen door de elite in een voor dat doel opgetrokken tuingebouwtje;

GARDEN HOUSE, in neogothic style, made circa 1830. The garden house has belonged since time immemorial to the house Harmelen, but was relocated in 1913 to the farm 't Spijk (Spijk 2) at Vleuten. After it had fallen into a state of disrepair there, it was thanks to the efforts of the Foundation for the Preservation of the Garden House 't Spijck that it was relocated in 2005 to the grounds of Huis Harmelen. The building was then restored. The garden house shows similarities with a neogothic bower at Elswout at Overveen. The design shows similarity with the designs of J.D. Zocher jr.

Description

The garden house stands just outside the moat of Huis Harmelen on the south-eastern bank. It has a rectangular ground plan and is constructed of wooden horizontally placed plank sections (tongue and groove). It comprises one storey under a gabled roof with overhang, clad with lozenges. The windows are provided with glazing bars.

The front facade (north-west) is articulated by four stylised pilasters furnished with knop capitals which support a gable top in which in the middle a pointed arch is cut out, its head furnished with two three-lobed traceries under a rose window. To the left and right of the arch the rose window equipped with coloured glass is repeated in the spandrels. The decoratively open-worked wooden parapet consists of diamond patterns, enlivened with three- and four-lobed motifs. The two outermost bays of the front facade are filled with glass at ground level, ending in two three-lobed arches. The central axis has a vertically divided window. The gable top has a neogothic moulding. The left side facade contains on the right a window and on the left a panel door. The right side facade contains a window and a door, mirrored from the left side facade. The rear facade is blind. On the basis of paint residues still present, the exterior was given a colourful finish in 2005 with white walls, mint green accents on the front facade, dark green and ochre yellow colouring on doors and windows.

The interior, presumably modernised after the relocation in 1913, is tiled and provided with a barrel vault with Art Nouveau plaster decorations. The woodwork is painted on the interior side of the facade in ochre yellow with red and green accents. The pilasters retain their original colouration.

Valuation

The garden house is of general importance for its

- Cultural-historical value as an example of a development connected to recreation by the elite in a garden building constructed for that purpose;

- Architectural-historical value as an example of a garden house in wood executed with rich detailing in predominantly neogothic style from the first half of the nineteenth century.
