Omschrijving

- wegens de ouderdom;

- wegens de nog vrijwel geheel intact zijnde 18de-eeuwse structuur;

- wegens de landschappelijk-visuele waarden.

Description

PARK LAYOUT based on a more or less rectangular geometric design from the 18th century as successor to a 17th-century brick layout with watercourses; the park, whose main layout, size and framework have scarcely changed since the middle of that century, was landscaped to a (very) minor extent in the early 19th century: the three round fish ponds lying in a line to the north of the long central axis may have been linked at that time to form a meandering pond. A large variety of deciduous and coniferous species around the meandering pond is an important characteristic of the landscape character. Also in the early 19th century, meandering paths were made in the existing woodland; the few solitary trees, including one directly behind the left outbuilding, may also date from that period. The central axis, the rectangular fish ponds, the ditch surrounding the entire site (part of the canalised stream system), the location of the kitchen garden and orchard and the gates all date from the middle of the 18th century or earlier.

The western part of the site consists mainly of standing woodland with undergrowth of, among other things, much holly; here and there is an open space, especially near the meandering pond; there are three important lanes, namely the north lane, the central axis and the cross lane. The north lane runs along the south side of the broad boundary ditch, which separates the site from the Prins Bernhardlaan. The north lane has no surfacing and is irregularly (i.e. in different sections) planted with old and young oak, young American oak and some old beech. The central axis has no surfacing and likewise an irregular and (partly) no planting; along the western section stand some rows of young beech. The cross lane, also unsurfaced, has an irregular planting of oak to the south of the central axis and no lane planting to the north of it; directly to the east of this lane section lies the largest of the three fish ponds; the other two lie on either side of the castle, separated from the moat by narrow embankments on which stand an irregular planting of various deciduous species. To the north of the most eastern pond, along the Prins Bernhardlaan, lies the triangular mill pond; the mill itself lies outside the complex. To the southwest of the left outbuilding lie the kitchen garden and the former orchard, now a meadow. From the Julianalaan a short driveway runs to the forecourt between the outbuildings; the lane is flanked by deciduous tree belts instead of avenue trees. The planting on either side of the driveway and the layout of the forecourt between the outbuildings date from after 1951. The quay walls at the access bridge date from 1964.

The eastern part of the park consists of meadows; along the western edge of it runs a narrow footpath (cherry lane), the southern half of which is planted with linden trees.

Valuation

The PARK LAYOUT belonging to the historic country estate Cannenburch is of general importance:

- on account of age;

- on account of the 18th-century structure which is still virtually entirely intact;

- on account of landscape-visual values.
