Inleiding
Het POSTKANTOOR annex WONING is gelegen op de hoek Markt - Koestraat, in het centrum van Geertruidenberg. Het postkantoor is aan de oost- en zuidzijde vastgebouwd aan de -veel lagere- aangrenzende panden. Het gebouw werd in 1901 opgetrokken. Het ontwerp, dat stijlelementen van de neorenaissance vertoont, werd geleverd door architect D.E.C. Knuttel van de Rijksgebouwendienst. De woning, die zich boven het kantoor bevindt, was oorspronkelijk bestemd voor de directeur van het postkantoor.
Omschrijving
Het deels onderkelderde postkantoor heeft een globaal rechthoekige plattegrond, met een afgeschuinde noordwestelijke hoek. Het pand telt drie bouwlagen onder een samengesteld schilddak, gedekt met kruispannen en verbeterde Hollandse pannen. Dakkapellen boven het noordelijke en westelijke dakschild. Op de hoek een toren onder schilddak, gedekt met leien. Bakgoot op klossen. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, met een hardstenen plint en vensterdorpels. Langs de bovenrand van de voorgevels een boogfries. Op de zuidelijke en oostelijke hoek een aan de bovenzijde uitkragende gevelpartij, afgesloten door een trapgeveltje.
In de korte noordelijke gevel geheel links de ingang van het postkantoor, bestaande uit een paneeldeur met zijlicht en halfrond bovenlicht. Hierin een kleine roedenverdeling. Rechts hiervan, ter plaatse van het kantoor een breed drielichtsvenster met kleine roedenverdeling in de bovenlichten. In het midden van de gevel, ter plaatse van de gang een smal venster met kleine roedenverdeling. De overige vertrekken zijn voorzien van schuifvensters met kleine roedenverdeling in de bovenlichten.
De westelijke gevel heeft eveneens ter plaatse van het kantoor drielichtsvensters. In het meest rechtse kantoorvenster is het middengedeelte dichtgezet ten behoeve van een bankautomaat. Ter plaatse van de woonvertrekken hierboven schuifvensters. Geheel rechts de ingang van de woning, bestaande uit een paneeldeur met bovenlicht. Hardstenen stoep. Links hiervan een zijingang naar het magazijn van het postkantoor. Boven de ingang van de woning, ter plaatse van het trappenhuis kruisvensters met kleine roedenverdeling in de bovenlichten. De achtergevel (oostgevel) is voorzien van T-vensters. Kleine roedenverdeling in de bovenlichten. Ingang met paneeldeur en bovenlicht naar het plat. Links hiervan een uitbouw ter plaatse van het toilet. In de noordelijke gevel van de uitbouw voor het trappenhuis per twee gekoppelde tweeruits ramen met kleine roedenverdeling. Geheel boven een drielichtsvenster met kleine roedenverdeling. Inwendig toont het pand in hoofdlijnen nog de oorspronkelijke indeling. Aan de noordzijde het postkantoor. Tegen de zuidgevel het portaal en het trappenhuis van de bovenwoning. Hierin liggen de belangrijkste vertrekken tegen de westgevel. Op de eerste verdieping de woonkamers en suite, gescheiden door schuifdeuren, op de tweede verdieping drie slaapkamers.
Tegen de achtergevel de gang, toiletten en op de noordoostelijke hoek een werkkamer. Hoewel het postkantoor deels gemoderniseerd is, resteert in de woning nog een groot aantal oorspronkelijke elementen. Hiervan zijn onder meer van belang: in het portaal van het postkantoor en van de woning een tegellambrisering, in het trappenhuis de oorspronkelijke houten trap, in diverse vertrekken oorspronkelijke paneeldeuren en deuromlijstingen, in de woonkamer stucplafonds, twee marmeren schouwen en houten vensterbanken.
Waardering
Het postkantoor met bovenwoning is van algemeen belang. Het object bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling: als postkantoor met luxueuze bovenwoning voor de directeur illustreert het een typologische ontwikkeling. Description
The partly cellared post office has a roughly rectangular floor plan, with a bevelled north-western corner. The building comprises three storeys under a combined hipped roof, covered with crossing tiles and improved Dutch tiles. Roof dormers above the northern and western roof slope. On the corner a tower under a hipped roof, covered with slates. Gutter on corbels. The facades are constructed in brick, with a sandstone plinth and window sills. Along the upper edge of the front facades a blind arcade. On the southern and eastern corner a projecting gable section at the top, terminated by a stepped gable.

The post office has architectural-historical value because of the neo-renaissance building style and because of the place which the building occupies within the oeuvre of architect of the State Building Service D.E.C. Knuttel. The post office has ensemble value because of the importance of this large and visually characteristic building for the appearance of the historic Markt of Geertruidenberg. The post office is finally of importance because of the integrity of both exterior and interior.
