Inleiding

Introduction

VILLA, erected between 1860 and 1862 in eclectic forms as a physician's residence commissioned by Adriana Godschalx from Middelrode and her husband, physician and obstetrician Johannes Stephanus Franz Kipp from Münster. Since 1928 the property has been continuously inhabited by notaries: first notary Dolk and from 1937 by father and son Wedemeijer.

The unknown architect also designed the property at Hoogstraat 51 for the Godschalx family.

The corner property is located on the northeastern side of the Hoogstraat; the old thoroughfare between Veghel and 's-Hertogenbosch and Rosmalen. On the southeastern side there is a single-storey conservatory from ca. 1968; on the northwestern side there is a coach house converted to office space in 1974: these structures fall outside the protection afforded by the national government. The property is surrounded by a garden with iron fencing on the street side. The garden layout and the small buildings within it fall outside the protection afforded by the national government.

Description

Large, partially detached villa on a square ground plan with cornice-topped facades of hand-moulded brickwork laid in alternating bond under a flat roof fitted with newly improved Dutch tile-covered hipped roofs. Four brick chimneys are situated at the corners of the roof sections. Two further chimneys are placed in the southeastern roof section. The symmetrically arranged front facade has a high, cemented plinth and is divided into five bays of which the entrance section is centrally placed. The entrance has a cemented surround with a canopy cornice that rests on consoles. Double panel door with cast-iron grilles. The windows on the ground storey are straight-headed and have six-pane sash windows with a divided fanlight and continuous ashlar sills. On the northwestern side a small inscription was placed here in 1860 with the names of those who commissioned the building of the house. The two windows to the left of the door have leaded-glass panes. The fanlights have rounded corners. The first-floor windows are smaller and have four-pane sash windows with a divided fanlight, rounded upper corners and cemented eyebrows at the top.

The continuous ashlar window sills also serve as a string course. Encircling cemented frieze with decorated volute-shaped consoles. In the roof section of the front facade there is a roof dormer with pediment and wooden brackets.

The southeastern facade has a wooden bay window from ca. 1968 and on the street side a six-pane sash window with divided fanlight. The top of the bay window is accessible via a straight-headed balcony door.

The rear facade was damaged in 1944. Some windows and a door have been replaced here. Internally the property is divided by a central hallway with black marble floor tiles. The hallway has a simply ornamented stucco ceiling. On the right side is the large salon with ornamental stucco ceiling and marble mantelpiece. On the left side is the drawing room which between 1918 and 1923 was provided by H. van Gemert and sons on the instructions of the then owner E.J.J. von Weyrother from Leeuwarden with oak wood panelling and a mantelpiece with ornamented wooden half-columns. During this renovation a small terrace was also built on the northwestern side.

The property has beneath the kitchen section on the northwestern side a small, rectangular cellar with round-arched niches for wine bottles. Via a wooden ladder stair one reaches the first floor which is also divided by a central hallway. The rooms here are only simply ornamented. In the bedroom at the front there is still a marble mantelpiece.

On the street side, over the full width of the plot, there is a simply detailed wrought-iron fence with pointed pickets and scrollwork.

Valuation

The villa is of general importance. The villa has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of socio-economic development whereby the wealthy bourgeoisie and the administrative elite settled in the immediate vicinity of 's-Hertogenbosch on the exit roads of the smaller, more rural places around it and had a country house built there.

The villa is of architectural-historical importance because of the special coherence between the constituent components, the typological and the art-historical quality of the applied eclectic stylistic elements. The villa has ensemble value because of the high-quality construction and the historical-spatial relationship with the roads and green spaces.
