Inleiding
Zesklassige openbare LAGERE SCHOOL MET HANDENARBEID- EN GYMNASTIEKLOKAAL en bijbehorende bakstenen MUUR, gebouwd door de gemeentearchitekt Justus Zuidema in 1929 in Late Amsterdamse Schoolstijl, gelegen op de hoek van de Coornhertstraat en de Achlumerstraat. In 1992 werd de school verbouwd, waarbij enkele lokalen met een serre naar het schoolplein werden uitgebreid maar de ruimtelijke structuur verder gehandhaafd bleef. De vensters van de klaslokalen en een aantal binnendeuren werden vervangen. Ook ging het glas-in-lood in het trappenhuis verloren.
Omschrijving
EXTERIEUR: Schoolgebouw op L-vormige plattegrond met een lange (west)vleugel van twee bouwlagen plus kap hoog, die de klaslokalen, het handenarbeidlokaal en een aangebouwde fietsenstalling bevat en een kortere (zuid)vleugel van een bouwlaag plus kap, die de lerarenkamer, het gymnastieklokaal en een kleedruimte herbergt. Op de hoek van de beide bouwdelen is de ingang ondergebracht in een licht risalerend, torenachtig element van twee in elkaar geschoven blokvormige volumes onder een plat dak. De school is opgebouwd uit geelgrijze klinkers in waalformaat. De daken zijn belegd met oranje Hollandse golfpannen. De noordgevel heeft op de begane grond een lang raamlint tussen uitgemetselde horizontale sierlagen met drieruiters, gescheiden door smalle muurdammen. Daarboven bevindt zich boven een fors dakoverstek een steil pannendak, dat onderbroken wordt door een lintvormig dakvenster over nagenoeg de gehele lengte, dat de gang van de tweede bouwlaag verlicht. Aan de westzijde is het handenarbeidlokaal aangebouwd onder een iets lager aanzettende schildkap. Het grote, vijftiendelige noordvenster breekt door de daklijst heen. In de oksel tussen deze bouwvolumina bevindt zich een blokvormig trappenhuis met plat dak, dat een herhaling is van de ingangspartij. De vensters aan de zijde van het schoolplein werden veranderd op een manier, die enigszins doet denken aan de originele. Het gebouw is aan de straatzijde omgeven door een gemetselde bakstenen muur, waarin opgenomen enkele plantenbakken.
INTERIEUR: Alle gangen hebben tegelvloeren en een lambrisering van gele geglazuurde tegels. De resterende binnendeuren en vensters vertonen sobere Amsterdamse Schoolvormen. De bordestrap bleef ongewijzigd, behoudens de beglazing. Beneden in de hal hangt een bronzen bel aan een smeedijzeren montuur, boven een verlichtingsornament, bestaande uit drie glazen bollen met matglazen schijven. De gymnastiekzaal werd verbouwd tot ruimte voor meervoudig gebruik en o.a. voorzien van een podium en een verlaagd plafond, waardoor de ziende bekapping deels aan het oog onttrokken werd. Tegenover elke klas bevindt zich in de gang een garderobenis. In iedere klas is een kastenwand met een fonteintje.
Waardering
SCHOOLGEBOUW met bijbehorende bakstenen MUUR van algemeen architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch belang:
- vanwege de lokale zeldzaamheid van gebouwen van deze kwaliteit in de Amsterdamse Schoolstijl;
- vanwege de ligging in de wijk, op een ruime hoek, omgeven door contemporaine lage woonhuisbebouwing, waar de school een monumentaal accent vormt;

Six-class public PRIMARY SCHOOL WITH MANUAL LABOUR AND GYMNASTICS CLASSROOM and associated brick WALL, built by the municipal architect Justus Zuidema in 1929 in Late Amsterdam School style, located on the corner of the Coornhertstraat and the Achlumerstraat. In 1992 the school was renovated, with some classrooms extended with a conservatory towards the school yard but the spatial structure otherwise maintained. The windows of the classrooms and a number of interior doors were replaced. The stained glass in the stairwell was also lost.
Description
EXTERIOR: School building on L-shaped ground plan with a long (west) wing of two storeys plus roof height, which contains the classrooms, the manual labour classroom and an attached bicycle shed and a shorter (south) wing of one storey plus roof, which houses the staff room, the gymnastics classroom and a changing room. The entrance at the corner of the two building sections is housed in a slightly projecting, tower-like element of two interlocking cubic volumes under a flat roof. The school is built from yellow-grey clinker bricks in Waal format. The roofs are covered with orange Dutch ribbed tiles. The north facade has on the ground floor a long window band between embossed horizontal decorative bands with three-part windows, separated by narrow wall piers. Above this, above a substantial roof overhang, is a steep tile roof, which is interrupted by a linear roof window covering almost the entire length, which lights the corridor of the second storey. On the west side the manual labour classroom is attached under a slightly lower-set hipped roof. The large, fifteen-part north window breaks through the roof line. In the angle between these building volumes is a cubic stairwell with flat roof, which is a repetition of the entrance section. The windows on the school yard side were changed in a manner that somewhat recalls the original. The building is surrounded on the street side by a mortared brick wall, in which some plant boxes are incorporated.
INTERIOR: All corridors have tiled floors and wainscoting of yellow glazed tiles. The remaining interior doors and windows display austere Amsterdam School forms. The staircase remained unchanged, except for the glazing. In the hall below hangs a bronze bell on a wrought-iron mount, above a lighting ornament consisting of three glass balls with frosted glass discs. The gymnastics hall was renovated into a multi-purpose room and provided with, among other things, a stage and a lowered ceiling, whereby the visible roof truss structure was partly hidden from view. Opposite each classroom there is a cloakroom alcove in the corridor. In each classroom there is a cabinet wall with a small sink.
