Inleiding
- vanwege de architectuur, die traditionele en verschillende andere invloeden aan elkaar knoopt;
- vanwege de verregaande mate van ongereptheid van exterieur en interieur;
- vanwege de samenhang met de pastorietuin, waarvan in het zuidelijke gedeelte de vijver en een gedeelte van de oorspronkelijke beplanting nog aanwezig is;

Description
Introduction
PARSONAGE forming part of the COMPLEX OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH WITH PARSONAGE, dedicated to John the Baptist, built on the initiative of pastor J.B.H.A.M. Tepe by H.P.J. de Vries from Rotterdam in 1932-'34 with the collaboration of Arjen Witteveen from Leeuwarden. Church, parsonage and two schools were located around a spacious square and form a modern variant of a Catholic enclave. One of the schools has been demolished and the other, in which a convent house was also situated, has changed its use. The parsonage underwent the same fate. The style is a mixture of traditional elements, Delft School and Scandinavian influences. The traditional is expressed among other things in the use of materials. The rough brick treatment (including mondsteen) with deeply recessed joints shows influences of Expressionism. The steel window frames of the parsonage reveal an interest in New Bauhaus and Dudok. If the design is traditional, the detailing is here and there very contemporary. The church has 800 seats and the complex further comprises a sacristy and a spacious parsonage with a garden. The church underwent only very minor alterations, which were mainly confined to the priests' choir. The passage from the church to the parsonage was sealed off when the parsonage took on an office function. The design also provided for a rectangular pond with garden to the southwest of the parsonage. Pond and garden still exist.
Description:
PARSONAGE: Building on a rectangular plan, adjoining the west side of the sacristy, constructed of rough multi-coloured clinkers (mondsteen) with deep joints, covered by a gabled roof, tiled with specially fired large red Roman tiles. Striking is the combination of traditional forms, such as a gabled roof between stepped gables, roof windows, a stair tower etc., with steel window frames, such as those used at the same time by proponents of New Bauhaus. The interior also shows these characteristics, such as in the kitchen fittings and in the plan: both storeys have a central corridor along the entire length.
EXTERIOR: The south facade contains on the ground floor two sets of double doors with sidelights and two windows, of which the right one was later converted into an entrance. On the upper storey there is a series of windows of different sizes that are not aligned with the openings on the ground floor. The roof has four small roof windows on this side. The east facade is, apart from a window on the upper storey and two small ones in the gable top, completely closed. The gable top is provided with shoulders. The north facade is the original entrance facade: the entrance, positioned entirely on the left, has a pointed-arch opened portal. To the right of it are three windows with fanlights. To the right of this is a tower-like extended staircase, which is lit by two lancet windows that run over almost the entire height. The staircase has a stepped gable with shoulders. The right corner is set back slightly and has a bay window on a basement, which is provided with brick lattice work. Above the bay window is a mandorla-shaped infill panel, filled with lattice work. The left gable section has two Flemish gables, again with shoulders. The west facade has the sacristy adjoining it. On the ground floor the entrance portal is lit by two pointed-arch openings with above it another mandorla-shaped opening. On the upper storey there is an emergency door. INTERIOR: The corridors have the original tile floors with glazed skirting boards. The doors are connected by a top-beam moulding. The door frames are without moulding, except in the rooms of the pastor. His office is connected via a four-part suite door to a meeting room. All rooms have built-in cupboards. The staircase has square, fluted stair posts. The railings on the wall side were renewed. The kitchen fittings were preserved almost unchanged including the cupboards, granite worktop and a fireplace with a metal hood.
Valuation:
The parsonage, forming part of the Roman Catholic John the Baptist Church is of general architectural-historical, cultural-historical and urban-planning importance:
- because of the architecture, which connects traditional and various other influences to each other;
- because of the high degree of intactness of exterior and interior;
- because of the connection with the parsonage garden, of which in the southern part the pond and a portion of the original planting still exist;
- because of its location on a remnant of a square and the connection with the church and the former school with convent house.
