Omschrijving
HOOFDGEBOUW (Meerssenhoven).

Description
Description
MAIN BUILDING (Meerssenhoven). The country house located on a rectangular moated site was built between 1743-1744 in classical style on medieval foundations (central section) and encloses a forecourt with three wings. The whitewashed house, constructed of brick and marl with corner blocks and a marl cornice, consists of a ground floor and principal storey beneath hipped roofs covered with slate, of which the central one is higher than those of the projecting wings; wooden roof dormers with three-sided pediments; striking are the high-stacked chimneys on the gable ends of the side wings. The south facade - except for the eastern bay - and the west facade are entirely constructed of marl above approximately 1.70m high sandstone plinth in ashlar work (rustica); in the west facade rusticated corbels and cannonballs are embedded; the central facade is also of marl. On the east side is a tower-like extension dating from 1902 with bevelled corners beneath a cupola roof with ornamental spire. The facades have a regular arrangement of segmental arched window openings in a hardstone surround, provided with ten-pane sash windows (c.1800) and multi-pane basement windows. The three-bay front facade has a central entrance section with corner pilasters and is crowned by a three-sided pediment with a clock face. The bel-etage is accessible via a double hardstone staircase running along the entire front facade, slightly curved, with wrought-iron railings in Louis XV and XVI style. The five-bay rear facade also has a central axis framed by pilasters and crowned by a pediment with on the bel-etage a fenetre à terre with wrought-iron railing in Louis XV style. In the tympanum is later applied the coat of arms of Itteren in plaster. In the INTERIOR, noteworthy are among others the partly medieval elliptical arched vaults of marl in the ground floor of the central section, and trough vaults on elliptical girdle arches of brick (east). The spatial arrangement of the bel-etage with central hall which provides access via four panelled doors to the rooms arranged in enfilade. The decoration of the interior in Louis XVI style from c.1800 such as the rich stucco in the hall after a design by Mathias Soiron with trophies of arts and sciences and medallions above the doors with relief of the four seasons; the staircases in the side wings with baluster railings; the stucco ceilings in the rooms, mostly stuccoed cove ceilings in Regency style; the chimney mantels (two marble and five cast-iron) and four mantels in Louis XVI style presumably after a design by Soiron; stuccoed beam ceilings. Carillon by U. Turdoir.
