Inleiding.

Introduction.

On the western side of Kerkstraat in Zeeland stands centrally in the village the R.C. CHURCH BUILDING of Saint James the Greater. The building is a design by architect C. van Dijk and was built in 1871-1872. In 1914 the building was extended by J.H.H. van Groenendael with a transept, in adapted neo-Gothic style.

Description.

The building is a non-oriented three-aisle basilical church with pseudo-transept. The building has a nave of three bays, adjoining it, drawn up to the height of the side aisles pseudo-transept of two bays with three-sided closed apse. The whole is covered by a saddle roof with slate in Maas-bond. On the crossing a hexagonal openwork wooden needle spire. Against the eastern facade of the nave stands a tower, consisting of four storeys, crowned with an octagonal tapering spire with wrought-iron cresting.

The masonry is built of brick, articulated horizontally by a sandstone cornice-moulding on the brick plinth, and finished with a chevron-arch frieze with toothband. The buttresses of the nave are twice subdivided and have sandstone offsets. At the transition between choir and choir-apse and against the tower the buttresses are placed diagonally. Between the buttresses of nave and choir high pointed-arch windows are placed, furnished with limestone harnesswork and tracery. The tower has a simple stepped pointed-arch brick portal with simple clamped doors, above which a six-lobe in oculi. On the second storey of the tower on the eastern side is a pointed-arch window with tracery, while the third storey is taken up by three lancet windows in niches. Above this on the fourth storey between two sound holes a clock is installed. The tower is crowned by an octagonal needle spire with slate in Maas-bond. On the northern side a boiler house, with as its counterpart on the southern side a sacristy. Two-manual organ with free Pedal, made in 1895 by F.C. Smits II from Reek. The Great Organ has 10 registers, the Swell 4, the Positive 8 and the Pedal 4. The Swell is playable on the Great Organ manual. The instrument is still in original condition. Valuation.

The parish church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is likewise of importance as an example of the typological development of the ecclesiastical centre. It has architectural-historical importance through the style and the detailing and the combination of church, parsonage and chapel of rest and is of art-historical importance through the interior components. It is likewise of importance as a representative example of the work of architect Van Dijk. It has ensemble values because of its particular setting, connected with the development of a typical Brabant church village. It has been well preserved and is of importance because of its architectural-historical and typological rarity.

Introduction.
