Inleiding
Petit.

Description
Introduction
MANSION from 1902 executed in Art Nouveau style on commission of the stonemason Ch.P.A.M. Petit. Design by the Breda architects' partnership P.A. Oomes and L. van der Pas. During construction in 1902 the front part of an early 19th-century house was demolished. The house was built on the harbour of Breda, which was filled in around 1970. The narrow tall house, with its front facade facing east, is squeezed in by neighbouring buildings on an irregularly shaped plot that extends behind various plots on the Haagweg and Prinsenkade. Two major renovations took place. The first in 1928 by architect H. Berben (Breda) who adapted the 19th-century rear facade. The second in 1970 by architect C.F. Verheul, who replaced the window and door arrangement in the front facade. Since around 1995 the rear facade has been clad with plastic panels. The building now serves a retail function.
Description
The mansion has four storeys, of which the lowest is the basement. The house has a composite roof form of gabled roof and flattened hipped roof covered with shingles. The front facade consists of two sections: a narrow recessed part with pediment-like crest and a projecting part with asymmetrical spout gable.
The house is built of red fired extruded brick laid in English bond, alternated in the front facade by natural stone of various colours and types for string courses, plinths, arches, mouldings, lintels, bay base and angle stones of the risalit. Components of this contain carved work with floral motifs. The front facade has a rusticated basement and a crowned natural stone coping. Wrought metalwork for balcony balustrades and window grilles. Wall openings with wooden sash windows and storefronts with curved lintels and geometric glazing bars in the fanlights furnished with coloured figured glass.
In the risalit carved natural stone three-sided bay with Art Nouveau tilework on the breast rail. The window between corner and middle shafts with small capitals has a large parabolic glazing bar arrangement. The two- and three-part windows in the facade are separated by stone shafts with bases and capitals. The arches and lintels above these are decorated with floral motifs. The wall opening above the balcony has a horseshoe arch.
On the storeys Art Nouveau interior is still partially present. The side facades are executed blind.
Valuation
The mansion is of general importance. It has architectural-historical values: it is of particular importance for the history of architecture and construction technique through the detailed application of Art Nouveau forms; it is of particular importance for the oeuvre of the Breda architects' partnership P.A. Oomes and L. van der Pas who frequently applied Art Nouveau in Breda. The object is of importance because of the aesthetic qualities of the design; it is of importance because of the special use of materials. Rarity: the object is rare as an intact example of an Art Nouveau building in the south of the Netherlands.
