Inleiding

R.K. KERK "Pastoor van Ars" uit 1929 in Expressionistische stijl, ontwerp van architect J. Hurks (Roosendaal).

De kerk ligt aan de zuidkant van de boswachterij Liesbos gescheiden door de A58, de weg van Roosendaal naar Breda. De kerk is niet georiënteerd. Het koor ligt op het zuiden. De hoofdingang aan de noordkant van de kerk ligt aan de straat.

Omschrijving

Driebeukige kerk op een kruisvormige plattegrond met schip van drie traveeën, vijfzijdige absis. Uitgebouwde sacristie tussen koor en linker transept en vierkante klokkentoren links naast de hoofdingang. De kerk heeft een zadeldak met een vierkant angelustorentje boven het koor, de sacristie een schilddak, de absis en beide torens tentdaken. De daken zijn belegd met geglazuurde verbeterde Hollandse pannen en op beide torendaken leipannen.

In voorgevel en beide transeptarmen vijfdelige verticale glas-in-lood vensters met geometrische verdeling. In de absis vijf spitsboogvensters. De klokkentoren heeft in de top een uurwerk met aan drie zijden een wijzerplaat en aan vier zijden over een groot deel van de hoogte een smalle verticale lichtspleet waarin eveneens glas-in-lood. De kerk is zowel binnen als buiten opgetrokken uit een lichte handgevormde baksteen, appelbloesemkleurig, gemetseld in kettingverband op een basement van een paarsrode steen. Deze laatste steen is ook voor de toren gebruikt. Onder de dakrand siermetselwerk. Muren absis met steunberen. In al de vensters natuurstenen lekdorpels van hardsteen. Het metselwerk wordt boven de verschillende ingangspartijen afgewisseld door betonnen luifels. Ook de galmgaten in de toren zijn van beton. Naast de hoofdingang een beeld van de patroonheilige van de kerk in Franse kalksteen.

Het interieur heeft paraboolvormige gewelven en bogen waarin bovendien ook gele baksteen en groen geglazuurde steen is verwerkt, met name in de bogen en horizontale banden. De absis is aan de binnenkant halfrond. In de kapitelen van de viering beeldhouwwerk, voorstellende de vier evangelisten.

Waardering

De kerk is van algemeen belang. Description

Three-aisled church on a cruciform ground plan with nave of three bays, five-sided apse. Projecting sacristy between choir and left transept and square bell tower to the left of the main entrance. The church has a gabled roof with a square angelus turret above the choir, the sacristy a hipped roof, the apse and both towers tent roofs. The roofs are covered with glazed improved Dutch tiles and on both tower roofs slate tiles.

In front facade and both transept arms five-part vertical leaded glass windows with geometric division. In the apse five pointed-arch windows. The bell tower has at the top a clock mechanism with dials on three sides and on four sides over a large part of the height a narrow vertical light slot with leaded glass as well. The church is constructed both inside and outside from a light hand-shaped brick, apple-blossom colour, laid in chain bond on a base of a purple-red stone. This latter stone is also used for the tower. Below the eaves edge decorative brickwork. Walls of apse with buttresses. In all the windows natural stone drip mouldings of hardstone. The brickwork is varied above the various entrance sections by concrete canopies. The sound holes in the tower are also of concrete. Next to the main entrance an image of the patron saint of the church in French limestone.

The interior has parabolic vaults and arches in which additionally yellow brick and green glazed stone is incorporated, particularly in the arches and horizontal bands. The apse is semicircular on the inside. In the capitals of the crossing are sculptures, representing the four evangelists.

Valuation

The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical values: it is of importance as a particular expression of the development of Catholicism; it is of importance as a particular expression of the typological development of a centralising church type in the interwar period. The object has architectural-historical values: it is of importance as a regional variant of the Expressionist formal language for the history of architecture; it is of importance for the oeuvre of the Brabant architect J. Hurks, who used the Expressionist formal language frequently and in a refined manner.
