P.J. Bekkers en J.P.I. Hegener. De kerk ligt op de hoek van de Tramstraat met de Kanaalstraat in het centrum van Eindhoven, nabij het beschermde Augustijnen klooster (monumentnummer 14627)
Omschrijving
Driebeukige neogotische KRUISKERK. Het schip telt vijf traveeën met zijbeuken, de transeptarmen zijn van twee traveeën diep. Het priesterkoor kent een vijf-achtste sluiting en is voorzien van een kooromgang, geflankeerd door sacristie en paterskoor en traptorentjes. Tegen de zijbeuken zijn uitgebouwde biechtstoelen en twee kapellen zichtbaar. Voor het schip bevindt zich een smal portaal, geflankeerd door kapellen op zeshoekige plattegrond met traptorens, de meest noordelijke daarvan is uitgebouwd tot toren met zes geledingen, bekroond door een H.Hart beeld van verguld koper (Jean Geelen). De zuidelijke kapel wordt bekroond door ingesnoerde spits.
Het geheel is uitgevoerd in baksteen onder een samengesteld zadeldak, gedekt met leien. Op de viering staat een achthoekige dakruiter. De gevels zijn voorzien van speklagen en metselmozaieken in gele strengperssteen en natuursteen elementen.
Het interieur is uitgevoerd in schoon metselwerk, in de koorsluiting is siermetselwerk aangebracht. Pijlers en scheibogen zijn van eenvoudige profielen voorzien en daarboven bevinden zich blindnissen en lichtbeukramen. Het interieur wordt overwelfd door bakstenen kruisribgewelven, in het transept is een stergewelf aangebracht.
De kerk heeft een omvangrijke Neogotische inventaris, geconcentreerd rond de voormalige Augustijnerorde en de late negentiende eeuw typerende devoties. De inventarisstukken werden tussen 1898 en 1918 vervaardigd door het Eindhovense atelier J. Custers. Het hoogaltaar met de ramen erboven stelt de Eucharistie en het H. Hart centraal. De commmuniebank bevat voorstellingen van de predikende Christus en symbolen, de preekstoel toont de westerse kerkvaders, evangelisten en de bergrede. In het koor koorbanken. In de transeptkapel vier altaren met Augustinus, Jozef, Nicolaas en Tolentino en Maria. Neogotische biechtstoelen, kerkbanken en kruisweg. In de transepten ramen van Ch. Eyck en D. Wilschut. In de kapel van O.L. Vrouw van Goeden Raad Neogotische ramen, in de Mariakapel ramen van Wilschut. Neogotisch orgel van M. Maarschalkerweerd (1906). Eenklaviers kabinetorgel, gemaakt door J.J. Vool in 1810.
Waardering
De kerk is van algemeen belang. Description
Three-aisled Neo-Gothic CRUCIFORM CHURCH. The nave comprises five bays with side aisles; the transept arms are two bays deep. The priest's choir has a five-eighths termination and is provided with a choir ambulatory, flanked by sacristy and choir room and stair turrets. Against the side aisles are visible built-out confessionals and two chapels. In front of the nave is a narrow portal, flanked by chapels on hexagonal floor plan with stair turrets, the northernmost of which is extended to a tower with six stages, crowned by a Sacred Heart statue of gilded copper (Jean Geelen). The southern chapel is crowned by a compressed spire.
The whole is executed in brick under a composite gabled roof, covered with slates. On the crossing stands an octagonal roof turret. The facades are provided with decorative bands and brick mosaic work in yellow pressed brick and natural stone elements.
The interior is executed in exposed brickwork; decorative brickwork is applied in the choir termination. Pillars and transverse arches are provided with simple profiles and above these are blind niches and clerestory windows. The interior is vaulted by brick cross-ribbed vaults; a star vault is applied in the transept.
The church has an extensive Neo-Gothic furnishings, concentrated around the former Augustinian order and late nineteenth-century typical devotions. The furnishing items were made between 1898 and 1918 by the Eindhoven atelier J. Custers. The high altar with the windows above it places the Eucharist and the Sacred Heart centrally. The communion rail contains depictions of the preaching Christ and symbols; the pulpit shows the Western Church Fathers, evangelists and the Sermon on the Mount. In the choir are choir stalls.
