Inleiding

54,8 cm. Mechanisch torenuurwerk, buiten gebruik gesteld.

Introduction

The ST. JAN EVANGELIST CHURCH in Hooge Mierde possesses a fifteenth century tower which has already been protected by the national government. The present church was built in 1922 after a design by architect Bonsel. Influences of the Amsterdam School are visible in the masonry.

Description

The centralizing church has two bays before and after the broad transept with corner chapels and a five-sided closed choir. Behind the choir there is on both sides a rectangular sacristy and auxiliary sacristy under a hipped roof. On the gabled roofs and the narrowed spire of the square roof turret lie slates in Maas bond. The façades are constructed of machine-made brick and are articulated by save-fields with ornamental masonry, partly by buttresses with chamfers and offsets. The transepts end in a masonry cross. The pointed-arch windows in the chapels and adjacent to them have ornamental masonry. In the transepts three pointed-arch windows are placed with tracery, in the top gable there is a four-pane round window. The side chapels, one window row after the tower, lie parallel to the nave. The side chapels after the transept are rotated a quarter turn and thus increase the centralizing effect of the interior. The interior consists of a centre nave without side aisles. The space is articulated by brick piers with ornamental masonry and bands, on which the rib-less net vaults rest. Apart from some white plastered wall sections, the whole is constructed in fair-faced masonry. The wall openings to the chapels are pointed-arch shaped. The choir tribune rests on two brick piers. The balustrade consists of open-worked masonry. The windows are provided with stained glass. In the apse this is stylized glass with cross motif and flowers. In the side chapels there is a window with Mary and one with Saint Cornelius. In the chapels and at the piers stand various Neo-gothic, polychrome wooden holy statues. In the chapels by the tower stand a Sacred Heart image and an image of the Holy Family on a painted column. In the latter also stands a baptismal font and a Neo-Romanesque base with (neo) Gothic lid. Between the chapel and the transept there is on both sides a confessional booth. The stations of the cross are painted in Expressionist style and signed by P. Engels. Bell frame with bell by J.J. Coppen, 1468, diam. 117 cm. In the church is installed a bell by W. van den Ghein, 1506, diam. 54.8 cm. Mechanical tower clock, put out of service.
