The register's description

Inleiding

STATIONSGEBOUW aan Limburgs oudste spoorlijn: de lijn Maastricht-Aken uit 1853. Het huidige gebouw dateert uit 1908. De toegepaste bouwstijl is traditionalistisch. Van het oorspronkelijke gebouw werd in 1975 een groot deel gesloopt. Een goederenloods en wachtzaal aan de rechterzijde van het hoofdgebouw werden afgebroken. Ook aan de linkerzijde van het hoofdgebouw werden bouwdelen gesloopt.

Van het oorspronkelijk 100 meter lange gebouw bleef slechts 38 meter over.

Omschrijving

Het station bestaat uit een hoofdgebouw op een veelhoekige plattegrond met aan de linkerzijde een L-vormige zijvleugel.

Het hoofdgebouw telt twee bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met zadeldaken en schilddaken. Aan de straatzijde twee zadeldaken met wolfseinden op houten consoles. De zijvleugel telt een bouwlaag en wordt afgedekt met zadeldaken. Daken gedekt met kruispannen. Diverse dakkapellen. Bakgoten op consoles en klossen. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen met metselwerk in kruisverband. Ook zijn graniet, hout, smeedwerk en pleisterwerk toegepast.

Rechthoekige houten vensters en deuren met bovenlichten. Deuren deels van omstreeks 1980.

HOOFDGEBOUW. Symmetrische indeling voorgevel straatzijde. Linker- en rechter voorgeveldeel uitgebouwd en uitlopend in een topgevel met overstekende kap op houten console.

Plint bekleed met graniet. In de uitgebouwde bouwdelen in de eerste bouwlaag een deur en venster. Het betreft de deuren van de woningen van de stationschefs in de tweede bouwlaag. In de tweede bouwlaag een driedelig venster. In de topgevel een dubbel venster. Tevens een tweetal smalle trappenhuisvensters. In het middendeel voorgevel twee dubbele toegangsdeuren met aan weerszijden smalle zijlichten. In de tweede bouwlaag vier vensters met bovenlichten.

Hardstenen lateien, aanzet- en sluitstenen. In het rechterzijgeveldakvlak een schoorsteen met aan de linkerzijde een dakkapel met lessenaarsdak. In de tweede bouwlaag linker- en rechterzijgevel een drietal vensters van ongelijke afmetingen. In het linkerzijgeveldakvlak een schoorsteen met aan de rechterzijde een dakkapel met lessenaarsdak.

Vrijwel symmetrische indeling gevel perronzijde. In middendeel voorgevel in de eerste bouwlaag een vijfzijdige erker met granieten plint en houten opbouw met rechthoekige vensters en een deur. Aan de rechterzijde van de erker een deur en twee vensters. Aan de linkerzijde van de erker een deur met aan de linkerzijde een- en aan de rechterzijde twee vensters.

Over de gehele gevelbreedte een perronluifel op gietijzeren kolommen. Op de luifel in de tweede bouwlaag een breed balkon met houten balustrade van omstreeks 1980. In de tweede bouwlaag twee balkondeuren en zes vensters. In het dakvlak twee vensters van omstreeks 1980 en twee dakkapellen.

Structuur van het INTERIEUR grotendeels in tact met hal met loketten en voormalige douane-kantoor. Toiletgroep van omstreeks 1990: deze is uitgesloten van bescherming. In de tweede bouwlaag twee woningen voor de stationschefs met authentieke indeling. In deze woningen authentieke paneeldeuren; plafonds met stucwerk; marmeren haardlijsten; houten trap met leuning met gietijzeren spijlen en houten handlijst.

L-VORMIGE UITBOUW aan linkerzijgevel van het hoofdgebouw.

De uitbouw telt een bouwlaag plus dakverdieping. Voorgevel STRAATZIJDE: rechtergeveldeel telt vier traveeën. De huidige dubbele deur is van omstreeks 1990. Oorspronkelijk bevond zich hier een vensterkozijn. Het uitgebouwde linkergeveldeel telt in de eerste bouwlaag drie vensters waarvan het middelste venster van omstreeks 1990. Hier bevond zich oorspronkelijk een deur. Dit geveldeel loopt uit in een topgevel met hierin een rechthoekig houten luik met bovenlicht met roedeverdeling. Aan weerszijden van het houten luik een segmentboogvormige blinde nis. In de linkerzijgevel een deur van omstreeks 1990.

Gevel PERRONZIJDE. Linkergeveldeel met twee dubbele deuren en twee vensters. Rechtergeveldeel met een deur met aan de rechterzijde twee vensters en aan de linkerzijde een venster. Dit geveldeel loopt uit in een topgevel met hierin een houten luik met aan de bovenzijde een rooster, en aan weerszijden een segmentboogvormige blinde nis.

In het INTERIEUR bevindt zich de voormalige VISITATIEZAAL thans restauratieruimte met houten tongewelf op drie houten spanten; de houten spanten rusten op granieten consoles; wanden met houten lambrisering; deuren met decoratieve houten omlijsting.

Waardering

Het stationsgebouw van Simpelveld bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische en typologische ontwikkeling. Architectuurhistorische waarden ontleent het stationsgebouw aan de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik, de ornamentiek en de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en delen van het interieur. Ensemblewaarde bezit het stationsgebouw als essentieel onderdeel van het spoorlijntraject Maastricht-Aken en van het grotere stationscomplex met seinhuisjes, watertoren en overige historische infrastructuur. Het stationsgebouw is tevens van bijzondere betekenis wegens de situering en daarmee verbonden met de ontwikkeling van de streek en van belang voor het aanzien van de kern Simpelveld. Het stationsgebouw is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de redelijke mate van architectonische gaafheid van het exterieur en een deel van het interieur en de architectuurhistorische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid. Het stationsgebouw is tevens van algemeen belang voor de geschiedenis van de infrastructuur, het transport en het reizen want het station vormt een belangwekkende kern in een betekenisvol en leesbaar ensemble van spoorweggebouwen en dito voorzieningen.

Structure of the INTERIOR largely intact with hall with ticket windows and former customs office. Toilet group from around 1990: this is excluded from protection. In the second storey two residences for the stationmasters with authentic layout. In these residences authentic panelled doors; ceilings with stuccowork; marble fireplace surrounds; wooden staircase with handrail with cast-iron balusters and wooden handrail.

The extension comprises one storey plus an attic storey. Front facade STREET SIDE: right facade section comprises four bays. The current double door is from around 1990. Originally a window frame was located here. The built-out left facade section comprises in the first storey three windows, of which the middle window is from around 1980. Originally a door was located here. This facade section terminates in a gable with a rectangular wooden shutter with fanlight with glazing bars. On either side of the wooden shutter a segment-arch-shaped blind niche. In the left side facade a door from around 1990.

Facade PLATFORM SIDE. Left facade section with two double doors and two windows. Right facade section with a door with two windows on the right side and one window on the left side. This facade section terminates in a gable with a wooden shutter with a grill on the top side, and on either side a segment-arch-shaped blind niche.

In the INTERIOR is located the former INSPECTION ROOM now used as a restoration space with wooden barrel vault on three wooden roof trusses; the wooden roof trusses rest on granite consoles; walls with wooden wainscoting; doors with decorative wooden framing.

Valuation

The station building of Simpelveld possesses cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of a socio-economic and typological development. The station building derives architectural-historical values from the aesthetic qualities of the design, the distinctive use of materials, the ornamentation and the distinctive coherence between exterior and parts of the interior. Ensemble value the station building possesses as an essential part of the Maastricht-Aachen railway line trajectory and of the larger station complex with signal boxes, water tower and other historical infrastructure. The station building is furthermore of particular significance by virtue of the location and is thereby connected with the development of the region and is important for the appearance of the centre of Simpelveld. The station building is finally of general importance by virtue of the reasonable degree of architectural integrity of the exterior and part of the interior and the architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity. The station building is moreover of general importance for the history of infrastructure, transport and travel as the station forms an important nucleus in a significant and legible ensemble of railway buildings and associated facilities.
