Inleiding
In 1910-1911 tot stand gekomen MAGAZIJN met HANDELSKANTOOR, TOONZAAL op de eerste verdieping en inpandige conciërgewoning, gebouwd in opdracht van Arnoldus M.A. Heystee naar een ontwerp van de architect J.F. Staal jr. in de stijl van het Berlagianisme. Heystee, lid van de firma Heystee, Smit & Co., liet het als magazijngebouw bouwen om er zijn zaak in tegels en faience, voordien gevestigd aan het Rembrandtplein, naartoe over te kunnen brengen. A. Boeken noemt dit gebouw Gebouw Heystee, hoewel andere bronnen het eveneens in opdracht van Heystee gebouwde Herengracht 545-549 als zodanig aanduiden.
Omschrijving
Op een rechthoekig grondplan tot stand gekomen gebouw met een begane grond, eerste en tweede verdieping en een zolderverdieping onder grotendeels plat dak. Aan de rechterzijde een hoger opgetrokken bouwdeel waarin onder meer het trappenhuis, dat wordt afgesloten met een iets teruggezette opbouw onder schilddak met rode pannen. De gevels op natuurstenen plint zijn gemetseld in lichtrode baksteen in afwisselend koppen- en strekkenlagen. In de vlakke gevel is verder gebruik gemaakt van natuursteen bij de erker, de aanzetstenen van de bogen, de dorpels, de accenten bij de rechte gevelbeëindiging en de deelzuiltjes van de vensters. Begane grond met arcade van vier halfronde bogen waarachter in oorsprong de etalage, thans niet meer aanwezig. De rechterboog diende als toegang tot de voormalige magazijnen. Rechts hiervan de toegang tot de voormalige kantoorruimten en toonzaal op de verdieping. Geheel links de toegangen tot de conciërgewoning en het central agency. Op de eerste verdieping aan de linkerzijde de driezijdige erker op getrapte console en met bovengelegen klein balkon met borstwering. De respectievelijk vier en vijf vensterpartijen op de eerste en tweede verdieping bestaan uit steeds drie gekoppelde vensters en twee deelzuiltjes van afgeronde rode en gele vormsteen. Het trappenhuis heeft kleine gekoppelde vensters onder dorpel met welving met bladmotief. Rechte en iets uitkragende gemetselde lijst bij de gevelbeëindiging. Het hogere bouwdeel aan de rechterzijde heeft een tegeltableau met het woord LUX en enkele vierkante vensters onder een dito uitkragende lijst. Achtergevel met vensters in groepen van drie en met tegelfries met blauwe, witte, rode en grijze tegels.
Waardering
Voormalig magazijn met kantoren en toonzaal uit 1910-1911 van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische en typologische waarde. De voorgevel is redelijk gaaf bewaard gebleven.

Warehouse with office, showroom on the first storey and integral caretaker's dwelling, built in 1910-1911 on the instructions of Arnoldus M.A. Heystee after a design by architect J.F. Heystee, member of the firm Heystee, Smit & Co., had it built as a warehouse building in order to transfer his business in tiles and faience, previously established at the Rembrandtplein, to this location. Description
Building on a rectangular ground plan with a ground floor, first and second storeys and an attic storey beneath a largely flat roof. On the right side a higher raised building section containing, among other things, the stairwell, which is closed off by a slightly recessed superstructure beneath a hipped roof with red tiles. The facades on a natural stone plinth are laid in light red brick in alternating headers and stretchers. In the flat facade further use was made of natural stone for the oriel, the jamb stones of the arches, the sills, the accents at the straight facade termination and the small pilasters of the windows. Ground floor with arcade of four semicircular arches behind which the shopfront was originally located, now no longer present. The right arch served as access to the former warehouses. To the right of this the access to the former office spaces and showroom on the upper floor. On the far left the accesses to the caretaker's dwelling and the central agency. On the first storey on the left side the three-sided oriel on stepped corbels and with overlying small balcony with balustrade. The window groups respectively of four and five bays on the first and second storeys each consist of three coupled windows and two small pilasters of rounded red and yellow moulded brick. The stairwell has small coupled windows beneath a sill with arched moulding with leaf motif. Straight and slightly projecting brick band at the facade termination. The higher building section on the right side has a tile tableau with the word LUX and several square windows beneath a likewise projecting band. Rear facade with windows in groups of three and with tile frieze in blue, white, red and grey tiles.
Valuation
Former warehouse with offices and showroom from 1910-1911 of general importance for reasons of architectural-historical and typological value. The front facade has remained in reasonably good condition.
