Inleiding
In opdracht van Disconto Effecten in 1909-1910 tot stand gekomen KANTOORGEBOUW op de hoek van de Leidsestraat en de Keizersgracht, naar een ontwerp van de architect W. Hamer in een door sobere Art Nouveau en Rationalisme beïnvloede stijl. Bij de bouw werden de gemeenschappelijke muren met de belendingen vernieuwd. In 1935 werd in opdracht van de Amsterdamsche-Bank N.V. de zolderverdieping gewijzigd. In 1947 werd door dezelfde opdrachtgever de begane grond gewijzigd. In 1972 werd in opdracht van H.L. Krot de bedrijfsruimte op de begane grond en eerste verdieping samengevoegd met de aangrenzende vertrekken van Leidsestraat nrs. 27 en 25 (huidige nummering).
NB. In het voor de bouw gesloopte hoekhuis uit 1675 gaf de natuurkundige en maker van meteorologische instrumenten D.G. Fahrenheit (1686-1736) les in de statica en de optica.
Omschrijving
Op nagenoeg rechthoekig grondplan tot stand gekomen en geheel onderkelderd kantoorgebouw met begane grond en drie verdiepingen. De dakschilden zijn gedekt met shingles en hebben een geprofileerde lijst op de overgang met het platte deel. De gevels zijn gemetseld in rode baksteen in afwisselend koppen- en strekkenlagen. Er is gebruik gemaakt van natuursteen op de aanzetstenen van bogen, strekken en hanenkammen, bij de cordonlijst, de afdekking van de gevelbeëindiging, de verjonging van de torenopbouw, de consoles en bij de hoekerker. Verder is decoratief gebruik gemaakt van groene baksten in het fries. De gevels van de begane grond zijn opgebouwd uit elementen van gepolijste hardsteen. De brede, gelede vensters zijn hier verdiept geplaatst onder ellipsbogen. De hoofdtoegang is overhoeks en wordt geflankeerd door dubbele kolommen met groeven. De ronde hoekerker op de eerste verdieping rust op een getrapte onderplaat en heeft een omlopende vensterpartij met deelzuiltjes en tweeruits bovenlichten en wordt afgesloten door een balkon met eenvoudig hekwerk. Op dezelfde hoogte bevindt zich aan de gevel aan de Keizersgracht een balkon met hekwerk met twee smeedijzeren sierende elementen. De gevelvensters onder strek of hanenkam zijn geleed en hebben drie-, vier-, of zesruits bovenlichten. Opvallend zijn de kruisvensters in het rechterdeel van de gevel aan de Keizersgracht en de gekoppelde, drievoudig of in serie van zes geplaatste vensters met middenkalf en bovenlicht onder halfronde toging op de derde verdieping. De gevels boven de hoekerker zijn hoger opgetrokken boven het fries en de uitkragende gootlijst op consoles en vormen een torenopbouw die zich van vierkant verjongt tot achthoek en boven enkele kleine vensters, lijst en consoles wordt afgesloten door een klokvormige torenhelm, bekleed met koperen platen. Nabij de belendingen worden de gevels ter hoogte van de kap afgesloten door opgaand muurwerk.
Waardering
Voormalig kantoorgebouw uit 1909-1910 van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische en typologische waarde. OFFICE BUILDING constructed in 1909-1910 on commission of Disconto Effecten at the corner of the Leidsestraat and the Keizersgracht, designed by architect W. In 1935 the attic storey was altered on commission of Amsterdamsche-Bank N.V. In 1947 the ground floor was altered by the same client. In 1972 the business space on the ground floor and first storey was combined with the adjoining rooms of Leidsestraat nos. 27 and 25 (current numbering) on commission of H.L. Krot.

Description
Office building on an almost rectangular ground plan, entirely cellared with ground floor and three storeys. The roof panels are covered with shingles and have a moulded cornice on the transition with the flat section. The facades are built of red brick in alternating header and stretcher courses. Natural stone has been used on the voussoirs of arches, stretches and dentils, on the beltcourse, the coping of the gable termination, the tapered transition of the tower structure, the consoles and on the corner turret. Further decorative use has been made of green bricks in the frieze. The ground floor facades are constructed from elements of polished stone. The wide, articulated windows are recessed here under elliptical arches. The main entrance is at the corner and is flanked by double fluted columns. The round corner turret on the first storey rests on a stepped base and has a continuous window section with pilasters and two-pane fanlights and is closed off by a balcony with simple railings. At the same height on the Keizersgracht facade is a balcony with railings with two wrought-iron decorative elements. The gable windows under stretcher or dentil are articulated and have three-, four- or six-pane fanlights. Striking are the cross windows in the right part of the Keizersgracht facade and the coupled, triple or in series of six placed windows with central mullion and fanlight under semi-circular arch on the third storey. The facades above the corner turret are raised higher above the frieze and the projecting gutter line on consoles and form a tower structure which tapers from square to octagon and above several small windows, cornice and consoles is crowned by a bell-shaped tower roof, clad with copper plates. Near the adjoining properties the facades at roof level are closed off by upstanding masonry.
Valuation
Former office building from 1909-1910 of general importance for its architectural-historical and typological value. The prominent siting at a corner of the Leidsestraat and the Keizersgracht, together with the other corner developments - building of Metz & Co on Keizersgracht no. 455 by Van Looy and the cigar shop on Keizersgracht no. 508 by A.C. Bleys with the bust of P.C. Hooft - forms an important added value.
