Inleiding

Introduction

In 1903-1904 a BANK BUILDING erected in a sober Art Nouveau style according to a design by G. Van Arkel commissioned by the Buitenlandsche Bankvereeniging through its director M. Philips. N.B. In 1916 the basement was rebuilt and fitted out as a safe-deposit. In 1955 the premises were occupied by the Arn. Gilissenbank.

Description

On a composite ground plan and constructed entirely in natural stone, a bank building consisting of a ground floor in hard stone and three storeys and an attic storey in French limestone. The whole is covered by a hipped roof. The sides of the building terminate in a stepped gable with steps provided with coping stones. The asymmetrical front facade shows three bays of different widths. In the left bay is the arched main entrance with wrought-iron ornamental gate. The coupled triple-light windows at the level of the three storeys above are provided with profiled window mullions and upper sills. The coupled triple-light window on the third storey shows an arched fanlight. In the attic storey beneath the straight overhanging gutter line is a coupled four-light with fanlights. The narrow middle bay shows at the level of the roof storey a round-arched window opening with balcony and stylised water spouts on either side. The bay terminates in a crenellated octagonal turret with pointed crown.

The right bay has at street level a second arched entrance with fanlight. Above the first storey an oriel with overhanging flat behind an iron ornamental brustwering between natural stone posts. The oriel rests on stepped ornamental consoles inspired by Moorish architecture. The window at the level of the third storey shows a large round-arched fanlight between stylised carved water spouts. The front facade is provided with decorative elements such as gold-coloured floral motifs on corner and voussoir stones at the level of the ground floor and beneath the balcony floor of the balcony in the narrow middle bay. Various upper sills are provided with chiselled ornamental motifs.

The left side facade shows an ornamental hoist beam above two rectangular closed windows placed directly above one another.

Valuation

Bank building of general importance due to cultural-historical value as an exponent of the transformation of the Damrak from a residential street into a shopping and office street around 1900, as well as of architectural-historical value as a representative example of the sober Art Nouveau style more in use in our country.
