Inleiding
In de knik van de zuidwestelijke hoek van het Prinseneiland opgetrokken dubbele ATELIERWONING, voorzien van twee afzonderlijke atelierruimten en bestemd voor twee kunstenaars, in 1898 ontworpen in een sobere eclectische stijl door C.J. Maks en oorspronkelijk bewoond door C.J. Maks jr. en G.H. Breitner (tot 1914). In 1921 zijn twee kozijnen in de voorgevel vergroot door C.J. Rijnierse in opdracht van C.J. Maks.
Omschrijving
Op een onregelmatige plattegrond in rode baksteen opgetrokken dubbele atelierwoning, aan de zij- en achterkanten voorzien van een cementlaag. Het pand ligt enkele meters achter de rooilijn. Het bestaat uit twee bouwlagen onder een plat dak met alleen aan de voorzijde een geprofileerde gootlijst. Aan de voorzijde bevinden zich twee houten ingangsportalen die als een korte buitengang tot in de rooilijn zijn uitgebouwd. De voordeuren aldaar zijn gezet tussen pilasters en een driehoekig fronton. De vensteropeningen aan de voorzijde zijn getoogd en voorzien van T-ramen. Aan de rechterzijde in de bovenverdieping bevinden zich enkele blinde vensters. De twee afzonderlijke atelierruimten bevinden zich aan de achterzijde en in de knik van het pand en zijn beide voorzien van grote lichtopeningen. Tussen de twee ateliers bevindt zich inwendig nog een aparte kleedruimte voor het model. Een enkel ateliervenster is nog voorzien van een luik met een persienne.
Waardering
Dubbele atelierwoning in eclectische trant van algemeen belang wegens architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde. Tevens van grote typologische waarde als eerste als zodanig gebouwde atelierwoning van Amsterdam en hoogstwaarschijnlijk ook van Nederland. Een toegevoegde waarde vormt de vermelding dat G.H. Breitner hier tot 1914 zijn werkruimte heeft gehad.

A double STUDIO HOUSE constructed in the bend of the southwest corner of Prinseneiland, provided with two separate studio spaces and intended for two artists, designed in 1898 in a sober eclectic style by C.J. Maks and originally inhabited by C.J. Maks jr. and G.H. Breitner (until 1914). In 1921 two window frames in the front gable were enlarged by C.J. Rijnierse on the instructions of C.J. Maks.
Description
A double studio house constructed in red brick on an irregular footprint, provided on the side and rear with a cement layer. The building is located several metres behind the building line. It consists of two storeys under a flat roof with a profiled gutter moulding only on the front side. On the front are located two wooden entrance portals which are extended as a short exterior passage to the building line. The front doors there are set between pilasters and a triangular pediment. The window openings on the front are arched and provided with T-windows. On the right side on the upper floor are located some blind windows. The two separate studio spaces are located on the rear and in the bend of the building and are both provided with large light openings. Between the two studios is located internally a separate dressing room for the model. A single studio window is still provided with a shutter with a jalousie.
Valuation
Double studio house in eclectic style of general importance due to architectural and cultural-historical value. Also of considerable typological value as the first purpose-built studio house of Amsterdam and very probably also of the Netherlands. An added value is provided by the mention that G.H. Breitner had his workspace here until 1914.
