Inleiding
Een in 1881 door J.W. Meyer verbouwd GRACHTENHUIS waarbij een geheel nieuwe voorgevel in een Neo-Hollandse Renaissance stijl werd ontworpen in opdracht van C. Gautzch. In dit pand woonde en werkte van 1855 tot 1875 de dichter Everardus Johannes Potgieter.
Zowel in 1918 als in 1929 werd het pand openbaar geveild. In 1949 werd de begane grond uitgebreid tot magazijn waarbij de binnenplaats werd overkapt.
Omschrijving
Op een rechthoekige plattegrond op een natuurstenen plint opgetrokken grachtenhuis bestaande uit een souterrain en twee verdiepingen onder een dwars zadeldak met steekkap en gedekt door shingles waarvoor de brede topgevel geplaatst is. De gevel is uit baksteen opgetrokken en beslaat vier traveeen. De gevel is strak geleed door twee als kroonlijst uitgewerkte waterlijsten. De entree is geplaatst in de tweede travee van links en voorzien van een rijk gepleisterde omlijsting bestaande uit Korinthische halfzuilen. In een nis boven de entree een witmarmeren buste van E.J. Potgieter, gemaakt in 1882 door H.A. Teixeira de Mattos. De buste rust op een uit boeken bestaand voetstuk. Achter de buste een gedenksteen, eveneens geplaatst in 1882 ter vervanging van een oudere gedenksteen uit 1879, waarop de tekst: 'E.J. Potgieter woonde in dit huis, van 12 Mei 1855 tot op zijnen sterfdag 3 Februari 1875'. Op de eerste verdieping is voor de tweede en derde travee een rijk bewerkt balcon op versierde consoles en met een opengewerkte balustrade geplaatst. De twee buitenste vensters zijn aan de onderzijde voorzien van een gepleisterd fries. Op vele plaatsen in de gevel, met name in de boogvelden van de vensters, zijn renaissancistische elementen aangebracht. Tevens is de gevel door pilasters van verschillende orden en door gepleisterde speklagen in horizontale en verticale richting geleed. De fenetres-a-terre in de topgevel zijn voorzien van een opengewerkte balustrade. De topgevel is verder nog voorzien van klauwstukken en twee decoratieve ijzeren hijsbalken.
Waardering
Grachtenhuis algemeen belang vanwege van architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de esthetische kwaliteit van het gevelontwerp alsmede van cultuurhistorische waarde als voormalig woonhuis van E.J. Potgieter.

Introduction
A CANAL HOUSE renovated in 1881 by J.W. Meyer whereby an entirely new front facade was designed in a Neo-Dutch Renaissance style on behalf of C. Gautzch. In this building the poet Everardus Johannes Potgieter lived and worked from 1855 to 1875.
Both in 1918 and in 1929 the building was publicly auctioned. In 1949 the ground floor was expanded for use as a warehouse whereby the courtyard was covered over.
Description
A canal house erected on a rectangular ground plan on a natural stone plinth consisting of a basement and two storeys under a transverse gabled roof with side gable and covered with shingles for which the broad gable is placed. The facade is constructed of brick and spans four bays. The facade is clearly articulated by two water moulds executed as cornices. The entrance is placed in the second bay from the left and provided with a richly stuccoed surround consisting of Corinthian half-columns. In a niche above the entrance a white marble bust of E.J. Potgieter, made in 1882 by H.A. Teixeira de Mattos. The bust rests on a pedestal made of books. Behind the bust a memorial stone, also placed in 1882 to replace an earlier memorial stone from 1879, on which the text: 'E.J. Potgieter lived in this house, from 12 May 1855 until his death 3 February 1875'. On the first storey, in front of the second and third bays, a richly worked balcony on decorated corbels and with an openwork balustrade is placed. The two outer windows are provided on the underside with a stuccoed frieze. In many places in the facade, notably in the spandrels of the windows, Renaissance elements are introduced. Furthermore, the facade is articulated by pilasters of different orders and by stuccoed bands in horizontal and vertical directions. The French windows in the gable are provided with an openwork balustrade. The gable is further still provided with keystones and two decorative iron hoisting beams.
Valuation
Canal house of general importance because of architectural-historical value on account of the aesthetic quality of the facade design as well as of cultural-historical value as the former residence of E.J. Potgieter.
