Inleiding
Aan de westzijde van het Rembrandtsplein geplaatst MONUMENT voorstellende de kunstschilder en etser Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rhijn (1606-1669) naar een naturalistisch ontwerp uit 1843 van L. Royer. N.B. Het gietmodel kwam in 1847 gereed. Het monument werd in 1851 gegoten door de fa. Enthoven te 's-Gravenhage. Op 27 mei 1852 werd het beeld in aanwezigheid van Koning Willem III en Prins Hendrik onthuld op de toenmalige Botermarkt bij de ingang van de Reguliersdwarsstraat. In 1875 werd het standbeeld naar de tegenwoordige plek verplaatst (na afbraak van de Boterwaag - voorheen Regulierspoort). In 1876 werd het plein omgedoopt in Rembrandtsplein. In 1924 werd het oude voetstuk door een nieuw vervangen.

Gietijzeren standbeeld op natuurstenen sokkel, met levensgrote voorstelling van de kunstenaar Rembrandt in staande houding met een etsnaald in de in de rechterhand; op het gietijzeren blok achter de Rembrandtfiguur onder meer een open geslagen (ets?) boek en een schilderspalet.
Opschriften: op de achterzijde van het beeld (W): 'L. Royer fcit 1847'.
Op de voorzijde van de sokkel (O): 'REMBRANDT'. Op de achterzijde van de sokkel (W): 'HULDE VAN HET NAGESLACHT, ANNO 1852'.
Waardering
Gietijzeren standbeeld van Rembrandt van algemeen belang vanwege de kunst- historische waarde vanwege het belang voor de 19de-eeuwse Nederlandse beeldhouwkunst alsmede van cultuurhistorische waarde als herinnering aan een van de grootste schilders uit de vaderlandse geschiedenis. Het beeld geldt bovendien als een topstuk in het oeuvre van Louis Royer.

Placed on the west side of Rembrandtsplein, a MONUMENT representing the painter and etcher Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606-1669) after a naturalistic design from 1843 by L. Royer. N.B. The casting model was completed in 1847. The monument was cast in 1851 by the firm Enthoven in The Hague. On 27 May 1852 the statue was unveiled in the presence of King Willem III and Prince Hendrik on the then Botermarkt at the entrance of Reguliersdwarsstraat. In 1875 the statue was moved to its present location (following demolition of the Boterwaag - formerly Regulierspoort). In 1876 the square was renamed Rembrandtsplein. In 1924 the old pedestal was replaced by a new one.

Cast-iron statue on natural stone base, with life-size representation of the artist Rembrandt in standing posture holding an etching needle in the right hand; on the cast-iron block behind the Rembrandt figure among other things an open (etching?) book and a painter's palette.
