Inleiding

Architect was P.H. van Niftrik; opdrachtgever was F.A.

A canal-side building dating from 1910 designed in neo-classical style by H.J.M. Walenkamp commissioned by J.C. Schulmayer. In 1918-19 the building was extensively renovated with the front facade entirely rebuilt in a rationalist style. Architect was P.H. van Niftrik; client was F.A. Sorel, director of N.V. 'De Globe', Company for the Exploitation of Office Premises. The renovated building contained offices and a concierge dwelling for an insurance company. The work was carried out by De Kondor.

Description

Constructed on an approximately rectangular, elongated floor plan a natural stone office building on a hard stone plinth consisting of three storeys under a straight gable termination above which a steeply pitched gabled roof with shingles. The roof is closed on both sides by a natural stone band on which a chimney. The building consists of two bays. All windows present in the facade are placed in broad hardwood frames. The entrance is situated in the right bay and consists of two natural stone pilasters under a broad arched frieze in which the house number 213 is carved. The two panelled doors are of oak wood. Above the entrance three deeply recessed small, square-shaped fanlights with leaded glass. On either side of the entrance an elongated leaded glass side light behind decorative grillwork. Above each side light likewise a rectangular window provided with leaded glass. To the left of the entrance there are three large windows in wooden frames above which leaded glass fanlights, each divided in two by a wooden glazing bar. Between the ground floor and the first storey a projecting drip moulding. Both bays on the upper storeys are provided with two coupled windows with sash windows and divided by wooden glazing bars with leaded fanlights. The wall surfaces in which the windows are placed project somewhat in relation to the remaining facade surfaces and both break through the cornice line. In the broad wall surface between the window sections of the first storey a sculptured medallion depicting Arion on a dolphin. Between the first and second storey square-shaped reliefs with representations of respectively life rings, anchors, pelicans and kangaroos with a young in the pouch. All these representations refer to the then function of the building namely insurance company. Below the cornice line a frieze of decorative relief representations. On the roof above both window bays a large roof dormer.

Valuation

Former insurance company of architectural-historical significance by virtue of the aesthetic value of the facade design. Furthermore of cultural-historical importance as an exponent of a socio-economic development namely the officialisation of the canal belt which commenced from approximately 1880 onwards.
