Inleiding

Men maakte gebruik van blauwe kalksteen. In totaal zestien lantaarns.

Introduction

A BRIDGE over the Amstel established in 1883. The bridge connects the Amstelstraat with the Waterlooplein/Nieuwe Amstelstraat. The commission to build the bridge was granted by the Department of Public Works of the municipality of Amsterdam. Designed by architects B. de Greef and W. Springer. Built in the style of eclecticism. The bridge number is 236, however the bridge is better known as the Blauwbrug. This third bridge at this location was opened in 1883 and owes its name to a predecessor, of which the woodwork was painted in blue colour. In connection with the International Colonial Exhibition held in Amsterdam in 1883, the then city architects designed two Amstel bridges: the Blauwbrug and the Hogesluis. In proportion to the more functionality-oriented nineteenth-century bridges, these bridges have great allure. The architects were possibly inspired by the Parisian Alexander III bridge over the Seine. The Amsterdam Omnibus Company contributed half the construction costs.

Description

Monumental fixed beam bridge with three waterways. Reinforced abutments of brick and natural stone, furnished at the ends with natural stone pylons. Blue limestone was used. The urn balustrade was executed in polished white limestone. Some balusters conceived as small pillars with capital. The railings and substructure are of cast iron, on the section above the waterways. The eight columns - four on each side - are of polished red Swedish granite. These columns rest on a base and large square plinth. Midway along the columns a ship shape, animal sculptures and mask. The animal sculptures function as consoles or supports for double lanterns. In total sixteen lanterns. At the top an Ionic capital and polychrome imperial crown. The reinforced piers are executed in a combination of brick and carved natural stone in the form of ship's bows.

Straight steel edge beams with simply moulded coping.

Valuation

Richly detailed fixed beam bridge of general significance because of architectural-historical value. Characteristic and rare appearance, in particular the reinforced abutments, the piers and the columns with lanterns. The Blauwbrug is reasonably well preserved. Also of great situational value as an image-defining element and connecting link between the Amstel embankments.
