Introduction

In 1863-1864 an ASSOCIATION BUILDING called Koning Willemshuis, built according to an eclectic design by J. van Maurik. The client was 'De Oprichtings-Commissie van een Wijkgesticht', relating to the Jordaanse neighbourhoods NN and RR and represented by among others Rev. C.S. Adama van Scholten and G.H. Crone.

Description

An association building built on a rectangular floor plan consisting of two storeys under a hipped roof with tiles. Brick facades in predominantly English bond. On the front roof-slope a simple roof dormer with wooden profiled hoisting beam. The front facade is seven bays wide and has two slightly projecting corner sections. On the ground floor in the central part five six-pane windows in slightly arched blind recesses with a natural stone sill and a brick band. In the corner projections a double wooden entrance door in broad wooden and profiled frame with small panes. Above the calf a slightly arched fanlight with geometric glazing bars. At the top, the profiling interrupted in a baroque manner, a double heraldic escutcheon surrounded by floral motifs and terminated by a heraldic crown. The whole is polychromed. Between the storeys a broad brick band with rectangular cartouches and black (ornamental) grilles and on the top and bottom a slightly projecting natural stone list. On the upper storey a series of seven arched windows in round-arch recesses. Six-pane glazing bars and a natural stone sill. Below the window of the left corner projection in a natural stone facade stone the year date '1813'. Below the window of the right corner projection in a natural stone facade stone the year date '1863'. Below the three central windows on a natural stone facade stone the name 'Koning Willemshuis'. Above the windows a broad wooden frieze with light profiling at the bottom. Facade is concluded with a broad projecting cornice. The left-hand side facade is simple and shows a single window and simple facade termination. Also the entrance to a former passage is still visible.
