Inleiding
Een in 1905-1906 door J.A. Van Straaten in een verstrakte Art Nouveau-stijl gerealiseerd KANTOORGEBOUW met EENGEZINSWONING en HEK, gebouwd in opdracht van Mr. Rudolf Pabus Dorhout Mees, een van de directeuren van de N.V. Friesch-Groningsche Hypotheekbank te Groningen. In 1951 is het tuinhuis vervangen door een nieuw.
In 1968 kwam het pand in handen van de ABN, thans ABN-AMRO.
Omschrijving
Op een rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken bankgebouw op een granieten sokkel (souterrain) en eveneens granieten stoep bestaande uit een souterrain, bel-étage en twee bouwlagen met een recht afgesloten gevel onder een plat dak. Het pand is geheel onderkelderd. De verdiepingen zijn opgetrokken uit een groene verblendsteen.
De rechthoekige ingang bevindt zich uiterst rechts met boven de ingang in steen gebeiteld het huisnummer 442. Links van de ingang een inscriptie waaruit blijkt dat de eerste steen werd gelegd door de 16-jarige Bernardus Dorhout Mees, zoon van de directeur. Vanaf de eerste verdieping in de middelste drie traveeen een geheel doorlopende erker gedragen door twee zware natuurstenen consoles. Boven de erkervensters van de eerste verdieping het wapen van Amsterdam geflankeerd door de wapens van Friesland en Groningen.
De vensters met schuiframen zijn alle regelmatig in de gevel geplaatst met onder elke rij vensters een overstekende granieten band. Het fries onder het dak is voorzien van een blokversiering. In de friezen boven de vensters van de tweede en derde verdieping door middel van stippen aangebrachte kruisvormige versieringen. Voor het pand bevindt zich een hekwerk tussen granieten posten.
INTERIEUR. Uit het oude pand, dat van 1892 tot 1905 diende als inrichting voor spraakgebrekkige en achterlijke kinderen, komt een plafondschildering dat herplaatst is in het huidige pand en zich bevindt in de rechter voorkamer op de benedenverdieping. Het is een schildering met taferelen uit het leven van Simson en een voorstelling met een kind met bloemen.
Waardering
Kantoorpand met bijbehorend interieuronderdelen en met hek in een verstrakte Art Nouveau-stijl van J.A. van Straaten van belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische waarde alsmede van belang vanwege het bijzondere materiaalgebruik.

An OFFICE BUILDING with DETACHED DWELLING and FENCE realised in 1905-1906 by J.A. Van Straaten in a restrained Art Nouveau style, built on commission of Mr. Rudolf Pabus Dorhout Mees, one of the directors of the N.V. Friesch-Groningsche Hypotheekbank at Groningen. In 1951 the garden house was replaced by a new one.
In 1968 the building came into the hands of the ABN, now ABN-AMRO.
Description
A bank building erected on a rectangular plan on a granite base (basement) and likewise granite stoep consisting of a basement, principal storey and two storeys with a straight-terminated facade beneath a flat roof. The building is entirely undercellared. The storeys are constructed from a green facing brick.
The rectangular entrance is situated at the far right with above the entrance the house number 442 chiselled in stone. To the left of the entrance an inscription showing that the first stone was laid by the 16-year-old Bernardus Dorhout Mees, son of the director. From the first storey in the middle three bays a continuous oriel carried by two heavy natural stone corbels. Above the oriel windows of the first storey the coat of arms of Amsterdam flanked by the coats of arms of Friesland and Groningen.
The windows with sash frames are all regularly placed in the facade with below each row of windows a projecting granite band. The frieze beneath the roof is provided with a block ornamentation. In the friezes above the windows of the second and third storey cross-shaped ornamentations applied by means of stippling. In front of the building a fence between granite posts.
INTERIOR. From the old building, which served from 1892 to 1905 as an institution for children with speech defects and mental disabilities, comes a ceiling painting which has been relocated in the current building and is situated in the right front room on the ground floor. It is a painting with scenes from the life of Samson and a representation with a child with flowers.
Valuation
Office building with associated interior components and with fence in a restrained Art Nouveau style by J.A. van Straaten of importance owing to its architectural historical value as well as of importance owing to the particular use of materials.
