Inleiding
Op een onregelmatig terrein, op de hoek van Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal en St. Luciënsteeg gelegen, in 1900-1901 in eclectische stijl zo goed als nieuw gebouwde DRUKKERIJ met KANTOREN in opdracht van D.A. van Waalwijk in opdracht van de Naamlooze Vennootschap het Nieuwsblad voor Nederland. De architecten waren A. Jacot en W. Oldewelt. Het betreft hier een in 1858 opgetrokken sociëteitsgebouw dat gebouwd werd in opdracht van het genootschap 'Concordia et Libertate' en dat in 1900-1901 door Jacot en Oldewelt zeer ingrijpend werd verbouwd. Van het oorspronkelijke pand resteert alleen nog het casco. In 1948 veranderd in opdracht van 'De Volkskrant' met behoud van bestemming daarvan tot 'zetterij, gieterij, kantoren en cantine'. Huidige bestemming: kantoor (souterrain en bel-etage) en luxe appartementen.
Omschrijving
Op een onregelmatige, aan de voorzijde geknikte, plattegrond opgetrokken bakstenen drukkerij met kantoren bestaande uit een souterrain, bel-etage, eerste verdieping en een tweede lagere verdieping onder deels van een koepel voorzien schuin oplopend plat dak. De koepel is voorzien van zinken kepers.
De gevel aan de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal bevat de monumentale uit witmarmer opgetrokken rondboogvormige ingang met marmeren zuilen en een sierijzeren hekwerk.
De ingang geeft toegang tot een eveneens marmeren vestibule met een witmarmeren bordestrap welke leidt naar de beletage. Op de grond een mozaïekvloer waarin de tekst CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT (door eendracht worden kleine zaken groter). Zowel op de bel-etage als de eerste verdieping zijn de grote vensters met schuiframen per drieën in de traveeën geplaatst. Op de beletage en de eerste verdieping worden de traveeën van elkaar gescheiden door gepleisterde lisenen. Tussen de eerste en de minder hoge tweede verdieping bevindt zich een breed fries. De kap is rondom voorzien van een balustrade van kandelaberzuiltjes, slechts aan de voorzijde onderbroken door een dakkapeltussen twee pylonen. De koepel is aan de bovenzijde eveneens voorzien van een borstwering van kandelaberzuiljes. De koepel is verder voorzien van een spitsvormige bekroning.
Waardering
Voormalige drukkerij met kantoren naar een ontwerp van A. Jacot en W. Oldewelt van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaaleconomische ontwikkeling. Eveneens van belang vanwege de historische-ruimtelijke relatie met de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal.

On an irregular site, on the corner of Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and St. Luciënsteeg located, in 1900-1901 constructed in eclectic style almost as new PRINTING WORKS with OFFICES on behalf of D.A. van Waalwijk on behalf of the Limited Company het Nieuwsblad voor Nederland. Description
Printing works with offices constructed on an irregular, at the front angled, ground plan made of brick consisting of a basement, principal floor, first storey and a second lower storey under partly a cupola provided sloping flat roof. The cupola is provided with zinc gutters.
The facade on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal contains the monumental entrance constructed from white marble of round-arch form with marble columns and ornamental ironwork gate.
The entrance provides access to an equally marble vestibule with a white marble dog-leg staircase which leads to the principal floor. On the ground a mosaic floor in which the text CONCORDIA RES PARVAE CRESCUNT (by harmony small things grow). Both on the principal floor and the first storey the large windows with sash windows are placed three per bay. On the principal floor and the first storey the bays are separated from each other by plastered pilaster strips. Between the first and the lower second storey there is a broad frieze. The roof is provided all around with a balustrade of candlestick columns, interrupted only at the front by a small roof projection between two pylons. The cupola is also provided at the top with a battlement of candlestick columns. The cupola is further provided with a pointed finial.
Valuation
Former printing works with offices to a design by A. Jacot and W. Oldewelt of general importance on account of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development. Also of importance on account of the historical-spatial relationship with the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal.
