Inleiding
Op een onregelmatig terrein aan de Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal, noordelijk aan het Keizerrijk, gelegen DRUKKERIJ met KANTOREN naar een ontwerp uit 1902 van Ed. Cuypers in opdracht van De Naamlooze Vennootschap Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van de Nieuwe Amsterdamsche Courant 'Algemeen Handelsblad'. De bouw van het nieuwe pand vond plaats in 1902 en 1903. Op 1 december van dat laatste jaar werd het gebouw in gebruik genomen. De betonconstructie is ontworpen door Perraud & Dumas, ingenieurs civils te Brussel en uitgevoerd door de Nederlandsche Maatschappij voor Monierwerken 'De Amstel'. De ijzerconstructie is ontworpen door Ir. van Heukelom te Zwolle. Het gebouw heeft een achtergevel aan de Spuistraat.
Omschrijving
Op een onregelmatige plattegrond gerealiseerde drukkerij met kantoren waarbij de voorgevel en rechter zijgevel zijn opgetrokken uit grote blokken Pouillenay-steen (een soort kalksteen) en de zijgevel aan het Keizerrijk en achtergevel aan de Spuistraat uit donkerbruine baksteen. Het gebouw bestaat uit een souterrain, bel-etage en twee verdiepingen onder een deels verglaasde kap. Het schuin oplopende deel van de kap is bedekt met zwarte pannen. De gevel bestaat uit twee hoekrisalieten waarvan de linker twee vensterassen breed is; de rechter slechts één vensteras. In de rechter risaliet bevindt zich de ingang onder een zwaar overhellende boog op consoles. De gebolde gevel en de ten opzichte van elkaar telkens overhangende verdiepingen rusten op zware consoles en voluten. De grote vensters - op de bel-etage rond - zijn op alle verdiepingen voorzien van houten roeden.
De linker hoekrisaliet eindigt in een top met in het fronton een reliëf voorstellende het Amsterdamse stadswapen in een combinatie van zowel het oude als het nieuwe wapen: een koggeschip voorzien van Andreaskruizen. De smallere rechter hoekrisaliet heeft boven de derde verdieping een goudkleurige schildering voorstellende de dageraad: een opkomende zon geflankeerd door twee hanen, waarschijnlijk refererend aan het feit dat het Algemeen Handelsblad rond de eeuwwisseling, naast de reguliere avondeditie, tevens een ochtendeditie verzorgde. De zware consoles in de middentravee zijn voorzien van bloemmotieven. In de fries tussen sousterrain en bel-etage in sierletters gegraveerd: 'ALGEMEEN HANDELSBLAD' tussen twee gestileerde Andreaskruizen.
Waardering
Voormalige krantendrukkerij met kantoren in Art Nouveau-stijl van algemeen belang vanwege architectuurhistorisch waarde wegens de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteit van de gevel en het materiaalgebruik (Pouillenay-steen) alsmede van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele- en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling. On an irregular site on the Nieuwe Zijds Voorburgwal, to the north adjoining the Keizerrijk, located PRINTING WORKS with OFFICES to a design from 1902 by Ed. Cuypers on behalf of the Limited Company Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van de Nieuwe Amsterdamsche Courant 'Algemeen Handelsblad'. The construction of the new building took place in 1902 and 1903. On 1 December of that latter year the building was put into use. The concrete construction was designed by Perraud & Dumas, civil engineers in Brussels and executed by the Nederlandsche Maatschappij voor Monierwerken 'De Amstel'. The iron construction was designed by Ir. van Heukelom in Zwolle. The building has a rear facade on the Spuistraat.
Description
Printing works with offices realised on an irregular ground plan where the front facade and right side facade are constructed from large blocks of Pouillenay stone (a type of limestone) and the side facade on the Keizerrijk and rear facade on the Spuistraat from dark brown brick. The building consists of a basement, principal floor and two storeys under a partly glazed roof truss structure. The sloping section of the roof is covered with black tiles. The facade consists of two corner projections of which the left one is two window bays wide; the right one only one window bay. In the right projection is located the entrance under a heavy overhanging arch on consoles. The curved facade and the successively overhanging storeys rest on heavy consoles and volutes. The large windows - on the principal floor round - are provided with wooden glazing bars on all storeys.
The left corner projection terminates in a gable with in the pediment a relief depicting the Amsterdam city coat of arms in a combination of both the old and new coat of arms: a cog ship provided with St Andrew's crosses. The narrower right corner projection has above the third storey a golden-coloured painting depicting the dawn: a rising sun flanked by two roosters, probably referring to the fact that the Algemeen Handelsblad at the turn of the century, in addition to the regular evening edition, also provided a morning edition. The heavy consoles in the central bay are provided with floral motifs. In the frieze between basement and principal floor engraved in ornamental lettering: 'ALGEMEEN HANDELSBLAD' between two stylised St Andrew's crosses.
Valuation
Former newspaper printing works with offices in Art Nouveau style of general importance on account of architectural-historical value due to the high-quality aesthetic quality of the facade and the use of materials (Pouillenay stone) as well as of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and socio-economic development. Furthermore of importance in the oeuvre of Ed. Cuypers.
