Inleiding
Aan de oostzijde van het Binnengasthuiscomplex in 1881 tot stand gekomen gebouw voor 'Model Apotheek en Laboratorium der Gezondheidsleer' naar een ontwerp in Neo-Renaissance van vermoedelijk W.H. Springer in opdracht van de regenten van het Binnen- en Buitengasthuis. Het pand maakt deel uit van het complex Binnengasthuis.
N.B. Gelijkstraats bevond zich de model-apotheek, een farmaceutisch laboratorium en een kamer voor de professor; op de eerste verdieping enkele laboratoria; op de tweede verdieping drie instrumentenkamers en een woning voor de conciërge. Recent verbouwd tot woonappartementen.
Omschrijving
Op een rechthoekig grondplan gerealiseerd apotheek- en laboratoriumgebouw opgetrokken uit een roodkleurige baksteen op een hardstenen basement. Het gebouw bestaat uit souterrain, bel-etage en twee verdiepingen onder een zadeldak. Het pand is vijf traveeën breed. Segmentboogvormige vensteropeningen in het souterrain met verdiept geplaatste ramen achter traliewerk van gaas. Rondboogvormige entree in middelste travee gevat in aedicula. Dubbele panelendeur. Boven de Ionische halfzuilen fries met daarop de letters: LABORATORIUM VOOR ARTSENIJBEREIDKUNDE. Onder het fronton een spaarveld met daarin geplaatst een cirkelvormig wapen. Het fronton bevindt zich precies boven de cordonband welke de overgang naar de eerste verdieping markeert. Bel-etage verder voorzien van verdiept geplaatste ramen in rechthoekige vensteropeningen. Bel-etage wordt afgesloten door een tegelfries met een ruitvormig patroon. Aan weerszijden van de bel-etage een pilaster op hardstenen sokkels.
De twee bovenverdiepingen met aan weerszijden sterk uitkragende pilasters op consoles. Rechthoekige vensteropeningen, op de eerste verdieping voorzien van boognissen met tegelmozaïek. Middelste venster tweede verdieping geplaatst tussen pilasters. De pilasters rusten op een breed uitkragende gepleisterde onderdorpel, op zijn beurt weer gedragen door twee sierconsoles. De gekorniste kroonlijst wordt gedragen door de hierboven vermelde pilasters. Onder de kroonlijst een mozaïekfries. De middelste travee wordt bekroond door een dakkapel met ingezwenkte top. Boven de rondboogvormige vensteropening met verdiept geplaatst raam waarboven boognis met mozaïek decoratief smeedijzeren hijsbalk.
Alle pilasters voorzien van speklagen. Vensters voorzien van hardstenen onderdorpels en gepleisterde hoek-, aanzet- en sluitstenen. Twee muurankers van decoratief ijzeren smeedwerk tussen eerste en tweede verdieping.
Waardering
Voormalig modelapotheek en laboratorium van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde alsmede van typologische waarde. Bovendien van belang als onderdeel van het Binnengasthuiscomplex.

Building erected in 1881 on the east side of the Binnengasthuis complex for a 'Model Pharmacy and Laboratory of Health Science' designed in Neo-Renaissance style, presumably by W.H. Springer, commissioned by the regents of the Binnen- and Buitengasthuis. The building forms part of the Binnengasthuis complex.
N.B. On the ground floor level was located the model pharmacy, a pharmaceutical laboratory and a room for the professor; on the first floor several laboratories; on the second floor three instrument rooms and a dwelling for the janitor. Recently converted into residential apartments.
Description
Pharmacy and laboratory building realised on a rectangular floor plan, constructed of red-coloured brick on a hardstone basement. The building comprises a basement, bel-etage and two storeys under a gabled roof. The building is five bays wide. Segmental arched window openings in the basement with windows set back behind wire mesh grille work. Round arched entrance in the middle bay set within an aedicula. Double panelled door. Above the Ionic pilasters a frieze bearing the letters: LABORATORIUM VOOR ARTSENIJBEREIDKUNDE. Below the pediment a spandrel panel containing a circular coat of arms. The pediment is positioned directly above the string course which marks the transition to the first floor. Bel-etage further provided with recessed windows in rectangular openings. Bel-etage closed off by a tile frieze with a diamond-shaped pattern. On either side of the bel-etage a pilaster on hardstone bases.
The two upper storeys with strongly projecting pilasters on consoles on either side. Rectangular window openings, on the first floor provided with arches with tile mosaic. Central window on the second floor placed between pilasters. The pilasters rest on a broadly projecting plastered window sill, in turn supported by two ornamental consoles. The corniced cornice is supported by the above-mentioned pilasters. Below the cornice a mosaic frieze. The central bay is crowned by a roof dormer with curved apex. Above the round arched window opening with recessed window above which an arch with mosaic decorative wrought-iron hoisting beam.
All pilasters provided with bond courses. Windows provided with hardstone window sills and plastered corner, base and closing stones. Two wall anchors of decorative wrought-iron work between the first and second floors.
