Omschrijving
Omschrijving Winkelmagazijn in 1904-1906 gebouwd naar ontwerp van Kropholler & Staal, deel uitmakend van het complex "De Utrecht". Op een rechthoekige plattegrond gerealiseerd winkelmagazijn bestaande uit een begane grond en drie verdiepingen onder een zadeldak met pannen. Het pand bestaat uit een geraamte van getrokken ijzeren kolommen met gietijzeren opleggingen en is bekleed met blokken grijskleurige natuursteen. De gevel eindigt in een tuit waarvan de schuine zijden zijn voorzien van vlechtwerk en een halverwege geplaatste uitkraging. De drie verdiepingen liggen iets teruggerooid achter verticaal geplaatste doorlopende kolommen. De daartussenliggende vlakken zijn geheel opgevuld met vensterpartijen. Boven deze verdiepingen een oranjekleurig tegeltableau waarin met witte letters UTRECHT. De geveltop is voorzien van drie gekoppelde vensters tussen natuurstenen stijlen. Ter hoogte van de vliering een diepliggende rondboogvormige vensteropening. Gevel aan de Karnemelksteeg voorzien van doorlopende kolommen over alle verdiepingen. Smalle venstertravee doorbreekt de uitkragende gootlijst en eindigt in een vierkante dakkapel. Onder de gootlijsten een oranjekleurig tegelfries. De natuursteen van de gevel is plaatselijk voorzien van eenvoudig gestileerd reliefwerk.

Winkelmagazijn behorend bij het complex 'De Utrecht' van algemeen belang vanwege cultuurhistorische waarde als uiting van het opkomend verzekeringswezen en tegelijk als exponent van het transformatieproces van het Damrak dat rond de eeuwwende in een snel tempo van een woonbuurt veranderde in een winkel- en kantoorstraat. Description Retail warehouse built in 1904-1906 after a design by Kropholler & Staal, forming part of the complex "De Utrecht". Retail warehouse realized on a rectangular plan consisting of a ground floor and three storeys under a gabled roof with tiles. The building consists of a framework of drawn iron columns with cast-iron bearings and is clad with blocks of grey-coloured natural stone. The facade ends in a spout gable whose sloping sides are provided with lattice work and a mid-height projecting ledge. The three storeys are set slightly back behind vertically placed continuous columns. The intervening surfaces are entirely filled with window units. Above these storeys an orange-coloured tile tableau in which white letters spell UTRECHT. The gable top is provided with three paired windows between natural stone mullions. At the level of the attic floor a deeply set round-arched window opening. Facade at the Karnemelksteeg provided with continuous columns over all storeys. Narrow window bay breaks through the projecting gutter line and ends in a square roof dormer. Below the gutter lines an orange-coloured tile frieze.
