Inleiding

Introduction

Freestanding wooden COAL SHED for coal storage, built in 1893 to the design of engineer J. van Hasselt at the former steam pumping station 'De Watergeus', with which it was connected by means of a footbridge.

The coal shed is constructed in wood, probably in connection with the Fortification Exclusion Act which stipulated that structures within the firing zone of a fortification could not be built in stone. This is the only surviving (wooden) coal shed at a pumping station in the province of South Holland, which gives the structure great rarity value. When the pumping station was electrified in 1923, the coal shed lost its original function. Next to the shed stands the stoker's house, also built in 1897 as part of the pumping station. The interior of the shed was renovated in the nineteen-nineties of the twentieth century.

Description

The shed is constructed from a rectangular ground plan using horizontal, vertical and diagonal wooden members and stands under a gabled roof covered with chamfered Dutch tiles. The wooden gables of the coal shed were constructed in such a way that they allowed air to pass through. During an interior renovation carried out in the nineteen-nineties, in which the original floor of yellow Dutch bricks was also replaced by a concrete floor and a loft was built in, the gables were sealed on the inside. The posts that run vertically through the long gables and provide the structure with the necessary stiffness are positioned on the outside, so that the pressure of the coal on the planks could be absorbed. The construction of the walls is reinforced by diagonal beams attached to the posts. The end gables are of the pointed gable type and are fitted with sheathing of vertical planks with a bevelled lower edge. The end gable facing the road and the pumping station contains a pair of doors made from diagonally running planks, which are composed of separately opening upper and lower doors.

Valuation

The coal shed is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value, architectural-historical value and ensemble value.

- The shed is of cultural-historical importance as a recognizable example of a wooden coal shed from the end of the nineteenth century, originally a functional component of the former steam pumping station De Watergeus. As such, the shed is connected with the history of water management in the Netherlands.

- The shed has architectural-historical and typological value because of the specific architectural characteristics connected with its function and location, because of its integrity, detailing and use of materials.

- The coal shed has ensemble value because of the historical functional relationship with the (since renovated) pumping station. The shed is also of importance because of its setting in relation to a centuries-old outfall point and because of its position as a wooden building in the firing zone of the fortification works.
