Inleiding

Introduction

SLOOPS SHED, built in 1886 on behalf of the Engineering 3rd Command in Brielle, for the benefit of a detachment of the Torpedo Company stationed in the city since 1870. The characteristic shed, built to a design by the First Present engineer G.J. Blauw and engineer P.C.B. van Marle, is stylistically related to Eclecticism. The sloops shed standing at the head of the Kostverloren lost its original function in 1922 with the departure of the Torpedo Service to Gorcum. Since then the building has had several functions. The former sloops shed is part of the protected townscape of Brielle. The profile of a slipway is still visible near the shed.

Description

Detached sloops shed on a rectangular ground plan, three-aisled under three parallel gabled roofs covered with asphalt paper with box gutters. The profiled barge boards rest on corbels. Along the side gable run gutters on wrought iron supports. The gables are built in brickwork in Flemish bond and provided with curved gable openings and gable accents in the form of hardstone keystones and arches of yellow brick including strength-pressed brick.

The gable section facing the Kostverloren shows three virtually identical pointed gables, each characterized by the presence of a large, double basket-arch-shaped entrance door, of which the one in the right gable section is fitted with a latch. The doors stand under arches enlivened with yellow strength-pressed brick with diamond heads in the hardstone keystones. The gable sections are separated from each other by pilasters with decorations of yellow brick in standing round-arch spandrels. The pilasters continue in climbing round-arch friezes, which are emphasized by the use of yellow brick in the arch edges and incised arch starts. The rectangular gable opening on the left of the gable is probably of later date. The hardstone gable stone above the middle door states the date 1886. Ten iron rings protrude from the bottom of the gable.

The right long side (east gable) contains a series of ten arched windows with shutters and standing under arches of yellow brick, and an incised gable edge. The rear gable contains per pointed gable three shuttered windows as those in the eastern long side. The pilasters and the arch friezes are identical to those in the front gable. The arrangement of the western long side is comparable to that of the eastern long side except for a double round-arch door instead of a window in the second axis from the left. The door stands in a gable opening reinforced and emphasized with hardstone corner blocks and keystone with diamond head. The arched windows contain recessed, behind-bars four-pane windows.

The former sloops shed has been internally renovated, with the originally single large space shed subdivided into a number of separate rooms. The iron Polonceau roof trusses used for the roof construction and the iron columns supporting them are present, but were concealed from view during the renovation.

Valuation

Sloops shed of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning value.

- The sloops shed is of cultural-historical importance because of the special function related to Brielle's role as a fortified city. As such, the shed is also inextricably linked with the city's history.

- The sloops shed has architectural-historical and typological value because of the specific architectural characteristics related to the function, because of the detailing and because of the material use.

- The sloops shed has urban planning value because of its special position at the head of the Kostverloren in the protected townscape of Brielle.

- The shed is also important because of the recognisability and high degree of integrity of the exterior and because of the preserved iron roof structure in the interior.
