Inleiding

Introduction

Rectory to the south of and belonging to the Roman Catholic parish church St. Odulphus (national monument no. 39923), situated in a spacious front garden to the west of the Dorpsstraat. The rectory is connected to the church by means of an intermediate section and was built between 1887 and 1889 in the manner of neo-renaissance after a design by Amsterdam architect A.C. Bleijs (1842-1912).

Description

Rectory built on a rectangular ground plan consisting of two storeys under a hipped roof covered with slates in Maas bond. The brickwork executed in red brick in English bond has an ornamental sandstone frame with a terra-cotta band.

The symmetrically arranged front facade (E) comprising five bays is articulated by a central risalit and corner pilasters which are connected by an arch frieze below the cornice. The central risalit has on the ground floor an ashlar entrance section under a pediment-like closure. Above the entrance section a four-pane sash window. The central risalit is closed above the cornice by a brick gable with gabled roof, hardstone shoulders, four-pane window and triangular top. The two bays on either side of the central risalit are located in spandrels and contain on ground floor and upper storey four-pane sash windows. On the ground floor these windows are provided with an arch in decorative brickwork.

The right side facade (N) is connected to the church via an intermediate section, largely blind and provided with an ashlar flue. The staircase behind this facade has a double window with leaded glass.

The left side facade (S) has against a large part of the first storey a wooden conservatory on stone foundation, which continues along the rear facade. On the upper storey originally two standing four-pane sash windows, of which only one remains.

Against the rear facade (W) comprising five bays stands on the right the oldest component of the conservatory which came into being in phases. This component has two glazed sliding doors with multi-pane fanlights. The wall area to the left of the conservatory has two four-pane sash windows. The storey has five four-pane sash windows and the roof panel two small roof dormers. The rear facade is closed by an arch frieze.

The interior layout on the ground floor is still virtually entirely original. Of importance are among others two rooms-en-suite on the south side of the corridor, a staircase, a scullery, a cellar and the sacristy on the north side of the corridor. The rooms-en-suite have panelled walls with cassettes, marble fireplaces with tiled fireplace and oak mantelpiece, panelled ceilings with stencilled paintings applied on canvas. The suite doors and the doors to the corridor are like the panelled walls painted with wood motif. The corridor has a carved staircase. The scullery still contains the original cabinets, tiled floor and sink. The cellar has a tiled floor and seven recesses for sacramental wine. The staircase is original and provided with a leaded glass window. Further original plaster ceilings and wall cabinets are present.

The sacristy of the church is accessible via the intermediate section and is still in original condition. The sacristy has an apse. Of the interior the oak cabinets, the ceiling and the floors are of importance.

Assessment

The rectory at the Roman Catholic St. Odulphus church is of general importance for its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a late 19th-century rectory with neo-renaissance elements. The rectory has ensemble value in relation to the church built at the same time and after a design by the same architect.
