Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former ORPHANAGE (deaconry house) of the Dutch Reformed Church with BOUNDARY FENCE, built in 1860 in eclectic style to the design of The Hague architect Verschoor under the supervision of L.J. Immink. The building stands set back on the west side of Zuideinde and is separated from it by means of an iron fence.
NB The extension dating from 1969 on the rear side of the building is of subordinate importance for the protection.
Description
Former orphanage on a rectangular ground plan, consisting of two storeys and a mezzanine under a gently sloping hipped roof with black Dutch tile. The masonry is built up in red brick, laid in header bond. The masonry on the four corners (corner pilasters), the two pilasters in the front facade and around the main entrance is rusticated. The masonry also has moulded stringcourses. Plinth, window sills and various other detailing are executed in sandstone. Above the mezzanine the masonry is closed off by a wooden cornice. The front facade (east) is symmetrical and has five window bays. The corner pilasters and two pilasters along the central axis divide this front facade into three bays. The central bay has one window axis and contains on the ground floor a projecting and arched main entrance with double door and multi-pane fanlight. The relieving arch above the main entrance has a keystone with the date 1860. Above this the projecting section is closed off by a flattened pediment-like element with the name De Kogge in the tympanum. The central bay has on the upper storey an arched fifteen-pane sash window and above it - at the height of the mezzanine - a climbing brick pattern frieze under a triangular, pediment-like, topped by a pediment gable. The flanking bays each have two fifteen-pane sash windows, rectangular on the ground floor and arched on the upper storey. The flanking bays have in the mezzanine each two horizontal three-pane windows. The left side facade (south) is symmetrical and has eight window bays, on the ground floor with rectangular fifteen-pane sash windows and on the upper storey with arched fifteen-pane sash windows. The mezzanine has horizontal three-pane windows and above the cornice the roof slope above the central six window bays has a series of six roof dormers installed in 1950. The right side facade (east) is symmetrical and is divided by two pilasters into three bays: a central bay spanning five window bays and a flanking and blank bay spanning one window bay. The central bay has on the ground floor five rectangular fifteen-pane sash windows and on the upper storey five arched fifteen-pane sash windows. The symmetrical white plastered rear facade (west) has the same articulation and the same use of windows as the front facade. The central bay has on the ground floor, instead of a door, a rectangular fifteen-pane sash window and the southern bay is concealed on the ground floor behind the aforementioned extension from 1969. The roof has Philibert trusses with wooden hooks attached to the trusses from which drying lines on sticks were suspended for drying laundry.
The boundary fence is a decorated iron railing on a built-up base.
Valuation
The former orphanage in eclectic style with its accompanying boundary fence is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural-historical value as a well-designed and well-preserved example of more distinguished mid 19th-century orphanage architecture.
