The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

In the village of Luijksgestel, on the southern side of Dorpsstraat, stands the TOWN HALL. The building dates from 1931-1932 and was constructed under the architecture of architect Brenders from Valkenswaard. After the Second World War, the building was extended several times, as a result of which the rear facade is now built in. All extensions fall outside the protection.

Description.

The single-storey town hall has a butterfly or fan-shaped floor plan and is covered by a composite roof, consisting of gabled roofs with tuile-du-nord tiles. In 2001, a total of six roof windows were installed. On the easternmost and westernmost roof slopes stand one and two chimneys respectively. The building consists of three parts: a central section with an open roof truss structure and main entrance is flanked by two diagonal wings. The facades are built in brick and sparsely furnished with decorative brickwork. All windows have sandstone sills. The northern street facade has in the central section a casement door with diabolo painting and geometrically divided fanlight under a segment-arched, substantially projecting timber canopy on composite stone consoles. The door is flanked on both sides by a ten-pane side light. The northern facade of the side wing stands diagonally to the facade with the entrance section and each has a pair of coupled sash windows with fanlight furnished with six tall and low panes. The lower lights are provided with shutters bearing diabolo painting. In both gable facades, each having an overhang with wind boards and a moulded drip moulding, is a timber cross window with lower shutters. The eastern side facade has a timber sash window as in the front facade and, on the rear side, at the height of the former strong room, a small four-pane light. The western side facade has a pair of sash windows as in the front facade. In the southern gable facade of the eastern wing a cross window with one-pane fanlight and one-pane lower light, flanked on the right side by a small hinged light, all identical to the cross window in the north facade; hinged light (right) of later date; large window frame right. In the corresponding gable facade on the western side a two-part eight-pane window. Southern gable facade (west) with two-part frame (one-pane lower, one-pane upper).

In the interior, the principal layout has been preserved: the council chamber, situated centrally in the building, is flanked on the eastern and western side respectively by the (former) mayor's office and strong room, and respectively a pair of rooms for the secretary and civil registry officers. The spaces are separated by corridors. In the western corridor, which was drawn up to the council chamber around 1970, there were counters for the civil registry. The council chamber has a roughly rectangular floor plan and is terminated on the eastern side with three sides. The original mortise and tenon ceiling with key blocks is still present. Of significance in the interior is furthermore the casement door to the northern hall. In the wall above the door is set in the hall a stone, on which an image of Christ showing His Sacred Heart, and the text: "In memory of the resolution / of the Council of the municipality of Luijksgestel / of 22-9-1937 for recognition of / Christ's Kingship". Hall with stuccoed ceiling, simple beam ceiling in former mayor's office. Of significance is a small garden plot edged with a beech hedge on the eastern side.

Valuation.

The town hall is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of a socio-economic and administrative development, namely the establishment of town halls for small municipalities and as an example of the typological development of the village town hall. It has architectural-historical value because of the style and as an example of the oeuvre of the architect. It is furthermore valuable because of the particular arrangement of the floor plan and the ornamentation. The building is important because of the integrity of the exterior and in part the interior. It is rare as an example of a town hall with butterfly floor plan.
