INLEIDING

A.A.J Karthon 10 juni MCMVII".

INTRODUCTION

The H. GERARDUS MAJELLA CHURCH with adjoining rectory was built in 1907 in the church village of De Weebosch in neo-Romanesque style after designs by architect Jan Stuyt.

DESCRIPTION

The basilical church has a double tower front and behind the four-bay nave a semicircular apse. In front of the tower front stands an open, partly wooden entrance portico under a gabled roof. The sacristy is built around the apse and has a flat roof. On the gabled roof of the nave, the lean-to roofs of the side aisles and on the roof of the portico lie slates in Maas bond. Originally the roof covering consisted of red tiles. The gutter lines rest on decorative brackets. Both confessionals are built out and have a flat roof. The facades are built up in machine-made brick. Around the window arches and at the apse some decorative brickwork is applied. The entrance portico has a brick parapet with worked wooden columns that leave a round-arched passage to the casement doors. The surrounding woodwork has a castellated edge and a series of round-arched recesses. In the gable above are a round-arched triple window and a tile tableau in quatrefoil form with an image of Gerardus Majella. On either side of this a small round tile tableau with "A/D" and "1907". Both towers have a square base and simple construction. On the left a coupled round-arched window in a niche with a dividing column, where the Sint Gerardus Chapel is located. Then an inlaid decorative band and two round-arched and slit windows. Finally come the coupled round-arched sound holes with dividing column. On the hipped roof stands a decorative cross. The right tower has on the ground floor a window with chevron-pattern decorative brickwork and instead of the second slit window a clock face in tilework. The rest of both towers match. In the side aisles each bay has one round-arched window, in the clerestory there are three round-arched windows in each bay. The interior is divided by segmental arches of yellow brick on pillars. The central nave has a wooden covering with collar ties, wind braces and tie beam. The side aisles have a flat wooden ceiling. The floor is tiled in a geometric pattern with colours. The choir gallery is executed in wood. The majority of the windows has geometric leaded glass. In the choir are three figurative windows, representing Fides, Charitas and Spes; these windows were designed in 1915 by Jan Oosterman. In the Gerardus chapel there are windows with scenes from the life of the saint Gerardus. The confessionals are closed by wooden panels with triple windows and carved work. At the triumphal arch there is a foundation stone: "1st stone P.L.P. A.A.J Karthon 10 June MCMVII". The inventory also includes among others a white plaster pulpit with round bowl and relief with Christ and texts, designed by J. Custers (1910). There is a white stone high altar and a white stone Gerardus altar with reliefs. The high altar was supplied by J. Custers in 1915. In the nave hang on the wall ten framed large canvases with scenes from the life of Gerardus Majella. These paintings date from 1922 and were painted by Albert Windhausen in Roermond. Further on the north side - in the extension of the side aisle of the church - a low flat-roofed extension, on the south side of the church an adjoining two-storey rectory under a hipped roof and a two-storey extension with flat roof (the residential section for the housekeeper of the rector), two flat-roofed single-storey building volumes, an inner courtyard and a brick wall with saddle coping.
