The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

On the eastern side of Stevert, a road running roughly north-south through the hamlet of the same name south of Steensel, stands a LONG-GABLED FARMHOUSE, consisting of a business section dating in its core from the first half of the nineteenth century, and a residential house situated to the south of it, dating from around 1890. The brickwork of the business section has been partially renewed several times between 1850 and 1940.

Description

The single-storey residential house, which has a basement on the southern side, has a roughly square ground plan and consists of a rectangular front section under a gabled roof with ridge tiles, and a slightly narrower rear section under a gabled roof with old Dutch tiles. The brick cornice-topped facade of the front section comprises five window bays, has a plastered plinth and is crowned by a double dentil course and a profiled wooden drip moulding.

Centrally positioned in the facade, which is provided with corner mouldings and cast-iron ornamental wall anchors, is a clamped front door with fanlight in a shallow portico, flanked on both sides by two arched sash windows with clamped shutters and sandstone thresholds.

The southern side facade has wrought-iron wall anchors in the stepped gable marked off with a brick saddle ridge. The brickwork of the ground floor is blank except for a small six-pane sash window at the height of the upper chamber, while on the first floor two sash windows are installed. The northern side facade is built against the business extension. The masonry of the stepped gable has been partially renewed in this location. The rear section has in the southern side facade on the ground floor a six-pane sash window with blinds. On the first floor a second six-pane sash window is installed. The stepped gable is finished at this point with a sandstone moulding. The rear facade is provided with partly modified sash windows and a clamped door with fanlight. The interior still retains its original layout with central corridor. Notable features include the original panelled doors, the tiled floor in the hall and the coffered ceiling beams. The lower business extension has brick facades, consisting of different phases of masonry. In the street facade, between two clamped sliding doors (dating from around 1930), a slightly arched clamped entrance gate is installed. In the rear facade situated on the eastern side, there is a series of six-pane stable windows and a clamped door. In front of the front facade lies a small tiled step with sandstone bands. Three pollarded linden trees stand in front of the residential house. The rear courtyard is separated from the public road by wrought-iron fencing with an entrance gate and brick pillars. In the interior, the original roof truss structure consisting of four couples remains present. The low-lying floor on the south-western side of the building is probably the remnant of a potshed. In the building there is still a brick pig sty.

Valuation The farmhouse is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as an example of the socio-economic development of agriculture in the sand region and as an example of the typological development of the farmhouse in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Architecturally, the property is of importance because of its building history, restrained ornamentation and particular coherence between exterior and interior. The farmhouse is important because of the integrity of its interior and exterior and is therefore rare.
