Omschrijving

Waardering

Description

The elongated block is situated on the north side of the courtyard. In front of the 8 ALMSHOUSES are small gardens bordered by hedges. The eight dwellings are arranged on a rectangular plan, with one storey and a hipped roof, covered with blue Dutch tiles.

The architecture is extremely austere. The facades are constructed of red brick. A slightly darker brick forms the plinth. A gutter moulding on consoles forms the transition to the sloping roof, on which four chimneys stand.

The symmetrical front facade of the housing block is articulated by the windows and doors. Each dwelling has one door and one window. The doors of the outer dwellings are placed at the ends of the facade. The remaining doors are coupled in pairs. The wooden doors are vertically profiled and fitted with a two-part fanlight. The sash windows are of the type 3x(1+2).

On the roof are eight dormers with double windows with cross-shaped glazing bars. The dormers have a profiled drip moulding and a flat roof.

The symmetrical rear facade comprises per dwelling a rear door with fanlight and a small extension with flat roof. These extensions are placed in pairs, with the exception of the two outer dwellings.

The left side facade is identical to the right side facade. These facades are blank except for a small rectangular window. The facades are designed in an extremely austere manner.

The interior of the dwellings is austere. The arrangement of the spaces has scarcely been altered. A narrow corridor provides access to the kitchen beyond. Next to the corridor is the only room of the dwelling. The upper storey originally consisted solely of attic space. Later, small rooms were mostly inserted here.

Valuation

The complex De Armen de Poth is of general importance due to its architectural and cultural-historical value as a fine example of an intact and rare housing complex for the elderly and due to the great extent to which this part contributes to the ensemble value of the complex dating from the Middle Ages.
