Inleiding
De ASSCHUUR werd in 1844 gebouwd in Traditioneel-Ambachtelijke stijl door meester-timmerman A. Oudijk en is gelegen op de voormalige stadsveste tussen de inmiddels gesloopte Potterspoort en de Rotterdamse Poort. Het pand ligt langs de Turfsingel.
In de asschuur werd haardas verzameld dat als grondstof voor de bereiding van loog voor de glas- en zeepfabrieken grote waarde had. Na 1876 was het haardas waardeloos geworden aangezien de sodafabricage was toegenomen. Tevens was de kwaliteit van het haardas gedaald door het toenemende verbruik van steenkolen. In 1922 werd het pand verbouwd en werd de gemeentelijke reiningsdienst er gehuisvest. In het midden kwamen een aantal paardestallen, aan de uiteinden een bergplaats voor ontsmettingsrijtuigen en handkarren en een reparatieinrichting.
Thans (1999) is de Asschuur het onderkomen voor een jongerensociëteit. Tijdens een verbouwing in de jaren tachtig van de 20ste eeuw zijn een aantal ramen en deuren dichtgemetseld. Aan de achterzijde is een nieuwe uitbouw gerealiseerd.
Omschrijving
Het op rechthoekige grondslag in baksteen opgetrokken pand bestaat uit twee verdiepingen onder een met rode Hollandse pannen gedekt gebroken schilddak waarvan de nokrichting parallel loopt met het water; rondom houten daklijsten op klampen; uileborden aan de kopse kanten. De dikke wanden van de lange zijden zijn schuin gemetseld zodat ze richting dakkap taps toelopen. Aan beide zijgevels een reeks steunberen die licht risalerend tegen de gevels zijn gemetseld. Het pand heeft aan de straatzijde afgeschuinde hoeken. Alle gevelopeningen hebben getoogde strekken en gemetselde dorpels. De gevel aan de singelzijde (zuid) heeft twee deuren en twee dakkapellen. Vensters worden afgewisseld met een steunbeer. Aan beide langszijden een reeks zware muurankers die soms de volledige hoogte van de muur beslaan. Aan de westelijke kopse kant een dubbele inrijdeur en een dakkapel met deuren. De tweede dubbele inrijdeur is dichtgemetseld en van stuclaag voorzien.
Aan de oostelijke kopse kant zijn twee dubbele, getoogde deuren dichtgemetseld en van een nieuwe stuclaag voorzien. Ten westen van het pand een gemetselde muur die de grond langs de singel van de weg afschermd.
Het interieur is diverse keren grondig gewijzigd.
Waardering
De asschuur is van algemeen belang wegens cultuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van een asschuur die gezien haar verschillende functies bovendien in Gouda tamelijk bekend is.

Introduction
The ASSCHUUR was built in 1844 in Traditional-Artisanal style by master carpenter A. Oudijk and is located on the former city rampart between the now demolished Potterspoort and the Rotterdamse Poort. The building is situated along the Turfsingel.

Description
The building, erected on a rectangular base in brick, consists of two storeys under a hipped roof covered with red Dutch tiles with the ridge line running parallel to the water; timber cornices all around on clamps; bargeboards on the gable ends. The thick walls of the long sides are laid at an angle so that they taper towards the roof structure. On both side gables a series of buttresses which are laid slightly projecting against the gables. The building has chamfered corners on the street side. All gable openings have arched stretches and masonry sills. The gable on the canal side (south) has two doors and two dormer windows. Windows alternate with a buttress. On both long sides a series of heavy wall anchors, some spanning the full height of the wall. On the western gable end a double carriage entrance and a dormer window with doors. The second double carriage entrance is bricked up and provided with a stucco layer.
On the eastern gable end two double, arched doors are bricked up and provided with a new stucco layer. To the west of the building a masonry wall which shields the ground along the canal from the road.
The interior has been substantially altered several times.
Valuation
The ash house is of general interest because of its cultural-historical value as a representative example of an ash house which, given its various functions, is moreover fairly well known in Gouda.
The ash house is of architectural-historical interest as a typological example.
The ash house is of urban-planning interest as a striking building along the canal at the Vest.
